The triple disk 'verter that I'm looking at is nearly $1000 by itself. I saw a nice unit from Fuddle for $600 but it's single disk I believe..... Brian is your Fuddle a single or multi disk? If single, what is the power rating? Can you go into lockup at WOT with yours?

I don't know for sure, but I'll guess that my Fuddle TC is a single disk. Fuddle Racing rates their performance series TC's to 1200 rwhp (way higher than my needs). It locks up fully at WOT even with the supercharger and you can really see the lock-up on the dyno graph (more importantly, you can really feel it lock-up - feels like the car is an 8-speed automatic as 3rd, 4th, and 5th are programmed to lock-up in my tune).

In the past (with my old 60's GM musclecars) I used Art Carr TC's with great results. Too bad Art Carr doesn't make TC's for our transmissions!

Hey Tom...Unless you got really big plans for that Mach 1 you will not need anything bigger than a single disc TC. I called PI about this exact question. They told me don't worry at my power levels I was way, way covered! Like twice over! PI said they had a much bigger lockup area then the stocker!

Well that's what I'm not sure of, is the future of the Mach. I may have some things up my sleeve...... not sure yet but that's why I've kinda been waiting on the 'verter. I don't want to do it twice and that includes adjusting the stall speed.

Yeah, it's cool that most of the converter builders offer a free stall speed adjustment, but they don't pay for the labor to R&R them or the shipping to send it back for that "free" adjustment. However, keep in mind that you can come really close to the ideal converter stall speed by comparing the rating for a stock motor versus the mods you've made. The more power you throw at a given converter, the higher rpm's it will flash to.

For some reference, a stock 300hp 05-09 GT with a TC rated to flash to 3600 rpm's (like the one I bought) will flash to roughly 3600 rpm's. I had a few mods resulting in about 330hp (at the flywheel) and it would flash to 3800 rpm's (30hp bumped the stall speed by 200 rpm's). Added the supercharger and am making about 450hp (at the flywheel) with the TC now flashing to 4800 rpm's (120hp more raised my stall speed another 1000 rpm's).

Lots of experts that I have spoken to say that you should choose a stall speed that is just a few hundred rpm's below the peak torque of your engine. A stock 300hp 4.6L 3V makes peak torque at 4,500 rpm's, so you should be looking at a 4,000 rpm TC to maximize results. A 3000 rpm TC will work wonders on that same car, but a 4000 rpm TC will work better. If you pick a converter that flashes higher than your peak torque and you're wasting area under the torque curve, so don't go too high.

Right, for my Mach with basic bolt ons I've been told 3600 to 4000 rpm. I don't know what I'm gonna do yet LOL, but thanks for the info.

Stalled autos=permagrin. I put a PI 3600 in my z28 and it definately made more of a difference than even my cam+tune. I love how the RPM's never drop below your stall speed at wot. If I am not mistaken PI will do one free restall/clean as well. 3600 was as high as I wanted to go because I put over 100 miles a day on it. I don't think you can go wrong with 3600 tom.

If you look at the really, really fast Mustangs out there (8 and 9 second cars), you'll find that most have been converted over to some sort of automatic transmission (powerglide, lentech, C4, C6, etc.). There is a point where shifting for yourself is costing valuable time at the dragstrip, regardless of skill level.
We had a 4r70w automatic with full manual valve-body, last year. Drove like a stick without a clutch and only 3 forward gears. Also had a T-brake. Car hit 10.0 running like crap...engine blew a short while later...no surprise. It had been abused all summer and had run lean a few times due to GT500 dual pump failures.

This year, we switched to a 2 speed powerglide. Also about 100 pounds lighter. Vid from 2008, showing car launching with the 4r and transbrake. Start of vid is at 10 lbs boost, middle 16lbs and last few runs were at 22lbs boost.

I just installed a LOOSE 3800 STALL converter in my 2004 Mach1, and I gotta say, my car feels like I supercharged it, As of right now I havent gotten a tune and I am running 3,55 gears, I was wondering, :Will I need a tune? It seems to lock up fine and my car is stock besides converter and a X pipe with Cats..
And if you think I would need a tune, Then how much difference did you feel before tune and after,

The tune for the converter is mostly for where it locks up. What gear, rpm, etc. The biggest advantage to a good tune at least for my 05 Stang is turning off Ford's torque management, turning up the pressure for shifts, what rpm each gear shifts... etc. I don't think you have the same auto trans as I do but it is surely worth looking into by a quality tuner like mine...Brenspeed!!

Hey all I read through all your posts and i got some questions!
I also have an 05 autogt with current mods jlt 2 cai w/sct 2 tuner, kooks l/t's o/r X & borla stingers,
and bought to install a TCI street fighter 3000 converter and also planning on some 3,73's or 4.10's still trying to decide on a gear! The thing is my car is in Greece and we dont have mustang tuners here! I know a guy here that has a dyno and he tunes Honda s2000 cars... Could he tune my car on the converter, L/T's and Gears (to be bought)? Or should I get a tune from my US tuner at Bamachips? I'm restricting my mods to stuff i can use when i decide to get a S/C!

I would get a tune like 70MACH1OWNER'S tune from Brenspeed.

+1. Brenspeed or Bamachips can send you a very good tune that's nearly as good as a dyno-tune. Once you add a supercharger, you'll really need to get on a dyno, but in the mean-time, a mail order tune from one of the reputable shops is great.
