Power Steering Fluid

The Ford dealership I take my GT to for fluid changes is telling me I need to change my power steering fluid every 27,000 miles. Has anyone else done this? I've owned lots of cars and have never chanaged the power steering fluild. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I just looked at my 2005 scheduled maintenance guide and it doesn't say to change the power steering fluid at all ...

Scam...

Dealerships are always saying crap like this...and yes, it probably would be better for your car (if it was done right)...but let's be real....it is really needed? I drove my last car for 200,000 miles...I never "flushed the radiator"...I never changed the transmission fluid..I never "flushed the brake fluid"...I only changed the plugs once.

Never had a problem. Why did I sell? The heater stopped working (I live in the South) so it was tolerable. The air stopped working (T-Tops so I was O.K.) The power windows stopped working (happened in the winter but not good with no air). And then finally, the oil pressure started going to zero at idle. At that mileage, I sold it to someone (who was glad to get a spotless '94 Z28) and the new Stang came into my life.

Bottom line..yes..you could spend 100K keeping a daily driver like new...or yes...you could keep your baby garaged and only take her out when the barometer is just so....but I drive my car and I enjoy it. And when it is worn out I will sell it and buy another one.

My 2 cents.

I've never changed any power steering fluid on any of my cars. I checked the scheduled maintenance for the Mustang and it does not list it anywhere that I noticed. I may have missed it, but I sure didn't see it.

The power steering fluid should be changed with the blinker fluid.

Oh make sure that you also have your emergency brake fluid changed as well.

Well, I have a 94 Bonneville with 199K on it. I do ALL of my maintenance.

Every 30K I change the tranny fluid (without dropping the pan).
At the same time I drain /change the power steering fluid.
And bleed / flush the brakes.

Change the plugs every 50K. Air filter every 20K.

I have only flushed the radiator once.

I go 20K miles on 25K synthetic oil.

Changed the alternator a couple of times. Changed the water pump 3 times. Changed the fuel pump 3 times. Changed the starter once.

Car runs like a champ. Probably in the $150 / year range of maintenance cost. I don't figure my 'labor' cost into it.

If you stay on top of the maintenance, 200K miles is nothing. And the money I save with lower insurance / taxes on a 14 year old car far offsets the maintenance costs...

There is no doubt that the Dealer will suggest all kinds of service. Although it won't hurt to change the PS fluid, anything you can do yourself - you will come out ahead.

BMW apparently does all the maintenance for the first 4 years without charge! For the power steering fluid, I changed mine out to Mobil 1 ATF in the Mustang to squeeze out every horsepower I can find.
