power shifting

I'm new on a manual trans and I want to know if it's the only way (power shifting) to make the 0-60 in 5 sec and I want to know if it's very hard on transmission..tanks in advance

My dad used to power shift in his 442 all the time when he drag raced. Of course, he went through 3 transmissions to learn how, if that tells you anything.

Yes, it's hard on the tranny. I wouldn't want to have to spend the money to replace one just to shave a couple of tenths of the 0-60 time. I think the car is already fast enough, but it's your decision. If you continue to do this, be prepared to write a big check.

Shifting with no clutch. At certain RPMs, the tranny and engine sync up so that using the clutch is "optional". Of course in the process of finding those points, you can really hurt the transmission, and even then, you have to be precise to hit it at the right time.

I thought power shifting was keeping your foot on the gas even while shifting with the clutch. You push the push in half way, and slam the gears in and out...all while giving it lots o gas.

You will damage youre tranny if you powershift regularly with the stock shifter, IMO, dont do it....

I think that name Power Shifting is used for both methods. Yes it's hard on the tranny. Also, I'm not sure if you can do the power shifting as in reaching the prime RPM where the gear is synched up with the collar. Modern cars now have synchronizers which allow the collar and the gear to make frictional contact before the dog teeth make contact. Eliminates the need for double clutching too.

Back in the day, "power shifting" was shifting without using the clutch. "Speed shifting" was using the clutch and leavig gas pedal at full throttle. I wouldn't recommend power shifting unless you are racing for large sums of money.

There is no point in shifting without the clutch. It won't save you any time.

Powershifting is keeping your foot in the gas while you clutch and shift. That will save you time, and although it is a little hard on the trans., I do it and I've never had a trans. go on me after owning 6 Mustangs with the T-5.

I think there are a great number of hot rodders from the 60s and 70s that would disgree with you, both about the definition and need for powerpooing.

Edit: HA HA.....I guess I forgot the "f" in "shift", and this is the result. How many other people here have ever powerpooed?

I used to powershift my 12 second 1991 LX all the time, tranny still in the car with no problems

Get a shifter with stop points. Pulling the shifter hard into the gear will gradually bend your input shaft (I think... it bends something in there)

Getting a shifter with stop points will prevent you from bending it when you powershift.

I learned to do it in High School, street racing. It took 2 trannys to learn, but it was great afterwards. But now I'm older and hopefully wiser. It not worth the frustration and fear factor trying to slam the shifter at the right moment and very clearly hearing the grind when you miss.

Don't do it, just enjoy the ride.

Get a pro 5.0 shifter, and learn how to do it on a dealer car, take one for a 'test drive' and learn that way.
