Poor Mans Air Box
Will try this over the weekend if I have time. I'm also doing the driving light conversion.
Until MMR releases their racing box I'm going to try this. (If anyone else has done this please let me know how it worked)
I am going to remove the stock box.
Use a small amount of silicone sealer around the air filter & the top portion of the box.
Use wire ties to hold the filter to the top of the box.
Support the assembly with some kind of clamp or ties.
Will be temporary, but curious to see the results.
Will post pics if works out.

My brother is the mad scientist. I guess I get some of that from him.
On the lights, I have 7" H-4's that I am hoping to replace the fogs with. If all goes well I will have a thread with pics.

Wouldn't you need to replace the air sensor to allow more air to enter? Here is my opinion (take it for what it's worth): if you are planning on getting the MMR racing intake kit anyway, just go ahead and get their standard kit for $200 and then get the racing kit upgrade for $150 when it comes out in 4-6 weeks. If you wait until the racing kit comes out, you will pay $350 for it anyway. So, you save no money by waiting. You just waste money and time (as well as maybe messing up your car) by rigging something yourself. The only bad thing about that is MMR is basically making these kits as they sell them because they are going so fast. Meaning that if you ordered it today, it wouldn't get to you for at least a week, maybe even two. But, then again... if you had ordered it a week or so ago when you started thinking of ways to rig this homemade air box up, you'd probably have it by now. Seriously though, order the regular kit now. Pay $200 now, $150 later rather than the full $350 later. You have to wait a week or so... but what's the rush?
I guess my thinking is I am also doing the muffler deletes on my car next week. MMR would not be able to deliver in time.
I would also like to do their kit in one replacement as they may find some additional improvements that may not carry over on the upgrade. I.E., the aluminum adapter maybe deleted & incorporated into the new tube. That is the way I would do it.

Good points. Now, what about this muffler delete? No mufflers? I can only imagine how that's gonna sound. Would love to hear a sound clip. And is that legal?

I'd be curious to hear what the new Mustang sounds like without mufflers. You'll definitely hear it coming from a mile away. Not sure if I'd go that route with my car (I didn't even want the Magnapaks and just got the regular Magnaflow mufflers), but it would be interesting to hear/see.
Can someone host a pic of my Poor mans box. Keep getting errors.
Please give me an email address for the file.
Just to echo Byron's comments. The car differently has a throatier sound & feels a little more responsive. Hope to see some mpg gains.
Took 10 minutes & some wire ties. Did not need to glue filter as the ties sealed it well.
Thanks in advance.

Bulitt do you have and know how to use an ohm meter? I you have one please check the Ford and the aftermarket sensor for the resistance of each. Now you ask Why is that? My understanding is the way they read the air flow is with a wire that has a current passing through it and the air flowing over it changes the resietance of the wire raising and lowering the voltage through it. I think it would be interesting to know how much the change between the two is since it is part of the fuel control. Base line is if aftermarker system has more air going through the voltage should be higher because the wire is cooler The voltage may be so small you cant read it if you have a cheap meter. I hade planed to do thos to mime but gave it away too quick. I am a engineer/wrench turner, retired has been and I know just enough about electronics to get in trouble
I take aftermarket claims with a grain of salt 50% is BS.
A man once said fishin lures catch about half the fish the other half catching the fisherman. Samething with aftermarket parts

I always did like that WHAMP sound you get. Some from my native area call it Carb Bark. Nothin like two fours or six duces doing their thing. I can't wait. I wish I could see more clearly what you did there with that air box. Did you only keep the top? I see I screwed that last posting up big time. Eyes give out and I can't see to correct at two in the mornin. I want to see how the grill comes out and how you wired the POO man's lights'
Thanks
Thanks
Hi mongoose
Maybe if M1 gets a chance later he could resize the pic a bit. It is very simply with the wire ties & does make a difference. I see by your other post that the response is a concern of yours. Try this, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Yes, have always like that carb noise. Reminds me of a time a bunch of buddies & I took my parents 1964 Olds 98 to the "pipe line" one hot summer night. The "pipe line" is a two lane road that runs parallel with the train track between two Westchester, NY towns. Its about 1.5 mile long & half way through is a fast right hand kink, then you have some esses as you are now entering the Bronx River Pkwy.
I had been playing with the air filer top off of the air cleaner in the garage & it sounded cool. I get to the pipe line, hop out & take off the filter top. I am up against a fellow I know with a sweet (was that a word back then, cool) Bonneville convertible, teal green with black leather.
My turn to run & I get a pretty good start maybe a fender lead & after about a 1/8 mile my car bogs, coughs, stalls & smoke is coming out of the hood. My buddies in the chase car show up as I open the hood to find the hood insulation had been stinked into the carb & was burning.
Cleaned it up, put the top back on & my parents never knew. Youth is wasted on the young.

Two questions.
So basically you did away withe the box itself and just have the filter attached to the cover?
Also, what is that in the picture (left side, middle) with the silver top and looks like it has a bunch of hydraulic lines going to it?
Jason
