Original 40 series Flowmaster Mufflers

I was thinking about experimenting with putting on a set of the original 2 chamber 40 series Flowmasters, but I was just curious if anyone has done this yet. Let me start by saying I already have the Flowmaster American Thunder axlebacks, but this being my 4th set and I am having issues with them again...I am leaning towards trying out something new (only it has to be Flowmaster because I love the sound and will buy nothing else.)

Now, I dont care about the drone everyone talks about, or how they say you lose a couple HP, I just want that original Flowmaster sound, but without the trumpets and the freakin muffler breaking apart on the inside again. I figure if my buddies have 500+ HP big block cars with the original 40 series Flowmasters and have no issues, I believe they should hold up to mine...lol.

If anyone has an O/R H-pipe and a set of original 40 series Flowmasters (not the American Thunder Kit) let me know how that setup works. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

If I am not mistaken the 40 series were SN95 only. I don't know anyone who would have fabricated the inlet / outlet pipes to make them into axlebacks. Good luck!

I have ATs, love em! No issues other than the crappy clamps. Sorry you have bad luck with yours!

First mod I made was to get 40's on. Went to a small muffler shop and the welding wasn't the prettiest, but the sound was AWESOME. Had them on the car until it went Roush, then was hugely let down by the Roush Magnaflow mufflers (xpipe woke em up, tho).

If you're local, I've had these up for sale for ever (see The Marketplace - http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showth...052#post802052)

Holeshot (dam, that's tough to type!) - I got your pm. I don't recall any trumpeting from the 40's, but it's been so long now that I can't swear to there being none. I do know that what little of that I hear from the Roush, I think of as not having happened with the 40's.

Sorry I can't be more useful than that.

Holeshot,

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm on the third set and the rattle is back. I love the Flowmaster sound but since my warranty is long gone now I'm not buying another set from them.

I think I'm just going to get some used SLP loudmouths. A friend of mine is a welder. I'm going to also try cutting these things open and rewelding the baffles and see if it works. Anybody have a picture of the inside of these mufflers?

I know you say you won't buy anything except Flowmater, but you really should look into Mac. They are by far my favorite chamebered exhaust, especially on the Sn197s.

I think I am going to try the 40 series and see how it sounds.

I talked to a guy who has been a Flowmaster dealer/installer since they started the company, he told me that with an O/R pipe on the new Mustang, you are gonna get that resonating trumpet sound because the mufflers are at the very back, and there are no tailpipes. He said that since there is so much distance after the crossover (whether it be an x or h pipe) between the mufflers, that the exhaust gases will become turbulent and cause the resonation. In the previous Mustangs, the mufflers were right after the midpipe, and there was a tailpipe which gave it a much more crisp refined sound. This guy knew his stuff, so we will see what happens.

I had the 40 series on my 00 GT vert for about two weeks...they were the kind of obnoxious loud that makes a car sound bad (IMO) unless you are pushing 400+ hp to back up the sound.........I once had a high school friend who put headers on an otherwise stock 1972 302-2V Torino and when he would uncork the headers and race around town - it sounded like a pig in mortal danger.....that's what I felt like driving my Stang with the Series 40's installed. Now there are a couple of guys with early model GM's and built small blocks with blowers sticking out of the hood in my area and the Series 40's sound great on those machines......

I know you don't care - but the drone was AWFUL - could not have a conversation with my passenger in the dreaded 2100 - 2300rpm "Drone Zone" which is the area in the RPM's you are at when cruising around town. I got to where I was having to shift around the drone....they did sound crisp and clear at WOT though - but as a daily driver - they were just not worth the headache (again IMO)...obviously sound is a very subjective thing and I wish you luck with your replacements....FWIW I have the GTA Supreme axlebacks on my '07 and they sound great (again, IMO).

Flowmaster still replaced my mufflers even though I'm past warranty. Putting the new ones up for sale. They claim I'm the only person that has had problems with the new "fixed" design
