One piece Driveshaft help

I am considering tossing the oak tree that is the stock driveshaft for a lighter one piece unit. I have read some other threads regarding this but wanted to gather some more info and have it in one place. If you have undertaken this mod, or are considering it like me, please chime in. I am looking for ease of install along with cost and performance. My main motivation is to shed some unnecessary weight, but picking up a few ponies in the process is a side affect I will take. I have a power adder so I need something that won't shred at 500hp, but I also don't need one for 1000hp either.

I am considering the shafts from JPC, PowerHouse, and The DriveShaftShop (BMR's seems like overkill). Do any of these have vibration issues? Do they have compatible safety loops? Any advice would be appreciated.

HI there

I too am considering an ALU driveshaft.

I am aiming to have approx 330 RWHP, thats close to 400BHP at the crank.

Is all I need to buy an ALU drive shaft? Any ones particular superior to others and is anything else needed as what are these safety hoop/loop things?

Anybody fitted one and noticed any real gains?

There are some positive benefits to this, for sure. Run a search on this forum, and also look here: http://www.modularfords.com/forums/s...earchid=457258

I'm currently running the Powerhouse unit, and it's pretty nice. I've only had it in the car for a week now, so I haven't had it at the track yet. But, I know Powerhouse has run many, many 10-sec passes on one, so it can handle anything I throw at it. Oh, and it bolts right in and shaves 31 pounds.

I know one guy who had the JPC version, but evidently some of them have been recalled due to vibration problems. He's switching to a Powerhouse like mine. Also, I believe the one from The DriveShaft Shop is only 3" in dia (versus 4"), is made of steel, and weighs a few pounds more than the aluminum shafts.

I have the Powerhouse driveshaft.
I am running it in my 06 vert with auto tranny. I Installed it myself in like 75 minutes.
Remove front driveshaft (4) 12 mm bolts, remove center carrier bearing bolts (2), remove rear six bolts to pinion flange.
Install old front bolts with locktite (75 ft/lbs), install new flange adapter with 4 new hex bolts (44 ft/lbs w/ locktite), finish installation with four more hex bolts (locktite) which mount the rear of shaft to pinion flange/adapter. Add a front driveshaft loop whlie you are under there by removing the two nuts holding the front heat shields, and use the studs to mount a safety loop. Test drive.
I have run my new driveshaft over 150 MPH and have made at least fifteen 12 second passes at the track - no vibrations, noises or issues.
Can feel the difference in seat of your pants too.
Good for 1000 HP more than I need!

Hi there

Can those with this fitted feel the difference when driving the car?

Anyone dynoed after having one fitted yet?

My car is a Saleen so has the Saleen short throw shifter, I read the links above and people thought that could cause space/fitment issues but nobody gave a real answer.

Will the powerhouse one fit my car as I have Saleen shifter?

Andy,

I'm positive what kind of shifter you use will not affect the driveshaft.

31 pounds is a rather significant savings, especially in the drivetrain. Maybe that will help cancel out the weight I added when I put on the 285's . I can imagine that it would be easier on the transmission and the differential if it weighs that much less.

Overall though, would my $700 or so be better off somewhere else, say better brakes?

As I said in my last post you can feel the difference in the seat of your pants. Her is a picture showing the stock shaft and the Powerhouse shaft.
It is good for 2 or 3 tenths in the 1/4

I like those results. Brakes can wait

Can I rent a torque wrench or would I be better off taking it to a shop to check the connections after I install it? Thanks for the pics and help!

I've made wholesale changes to the car all at the same time, so it would be impossible for me to tell.

I suggest that you just buy a torque wrench at Sears. They are not too expensive.
The only special tool you need is a short 12 point 12mm socket (not a hex) and a swivel extension so you can get those front four bolts out and a 8mm allen key socket that will be used to tighten the back eight hex (allen) bolts to the flange, and don't forget the blue locktite!
It would be silly to pay someone to install this driveshaft - it is that easy.

Most of you seem to have gone with the PowerHouse unit so I think I may go that route. I have heard some "building" them from Ford Ranger shafts, but I am not that adventurous. Since you guys have installed these yourselves, I assume you were able to do so using jackstands? I don't have access to a lift so I want to be sure it can be done in the driveway. Thanks

I know i dont have a gt, but i also have the powerhouse driveshaft. It took about 10 minutes to install. I did this on my rack at my work (made it lots easier obviously), but i dunno if the GT shaft is that much diff than the v6. I was able to get a shallow socket on mine, loosening and tightening.

i ran back to back weeks with the driveshaft. Ran 14.71 with 104 degree weather and a 2.016 60' time.
Next week i ran a 14.80 with 111 degree weather, and a 2.290 60' time (traction was for a loss, as anyone that reads 2005stang would have seen from that night, as a couple of us, with me being one, almost lost our cars). The 60' time alone cost me 2-4 tenths of a second. my mph did go from 90 to 92.5 though, even with the worse 60' time.

I would love to get an AL drive shaft but alas I'm broke

Actually I'm worse than broke, about $8K in the red.

Guess I should put my mods on hold for now.
