One More 15-20 HP Bolt-on Mod?
So, after the CAI and tune, UD pulleys, aluminum driveshaft, are there any bolt-ons that would give about 15-20 HP? I'm not convinced axlebacks are going to do it. Good sound maybe, but I don't think much HP.
Any ideas?

Dan, I agree about the mufflers. That's what I was saying, or trying to say. There was a muffler shoot out in MM&FF a while back and the stock system was as good as any of the other aftermarket brands.
I do think long tube headers will give that 15-20 or maybe a little more, but I'd like to try to keep the GT smog legal. The charge motion plate removal has been written up as giving some help, at the top end if I remember. That might be a way to go.

20 horsepower? Someone is smokin something illegal. We have been beating the X pipe to death in another thread and is worth maybe 5 HP tops!

Heard that......... on a related note, if you search this site you will find a review from Brenspeed on the offroad H pipe that they sell. It's worth 8 horse over 5000 rpm. I doubt that simply changing from an H to an X will yield an additional 12 horse.

I agreed with whoever said that mufflers don't add horsepower until I watched Horsepower TV last weekend where they dynoed a 06 GT with Roushcharger and got around 350rwhp, then they put on a roush axleback and picked up close to 9 more HP at the wheels. Granted it was on a forced induction application, but still.

If you look closely at the numbers from the shootout, you do not gain much in peak HP or TQ (perhaps 1-2 HP), but there were some decent gains at the low end of the RPM range 2100-3000RPM - some as much as 25 hp. I recently installed the FRPP axel back, not much different SOP at the top, but off line I can now chirp my tires. So you might see a little difference at the track.

Justin Burcham did a bit in the latest MM&FF with a stick and auto GT with CAI, tune, driveshafts, shaving a bit of weight and running the 1/4 mile. There was similar news last year where he ran a GT in the 11's with some NOS. I don't know how simple a bolt-on you're looking for, but they have an adjustable 25 to 100 HP NOS kit available for around $600. I don't believe HP is always the answer, sometimes it is about shaving weight to get the desired results.

Maybe mufflers won't increase HP, but has anyone tried going into a muffler shop to have them cut and replace the factory over-the-axle U-pipes that look like they were bent in a vise? They have to be at least 1/2" smaller in diameter over the rear axle!!
For $135 I'm buying the FRPP x-pipe. I'll post results here later.

OK, one more thought on the intake side. There are now a bunch of larger diameter throttle bodies. Supposedly giving anywhere from 15-20 HP if you read their ads. But, I have to say that my experience with aftermarket throttle bodies from one of those big name manufacturers, whose initials start with BBK, was terrible. I put one on my '96. No matter how much fussing I did, I couldn't get the car to run right. I tossed it and put the Ford TB back on. Everything was fine. By the way, I didn't detect any increase in power. If there was anything, it must have been in the 2-3 HP range. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
