Off-Road H-Pipe: weld or clamp?

Getting my Pypes O/R H-Pipe next week. I've read that the supplied clamp isn't too good of a quality.

For the pro clamp folks, is it good enough or should I look for a better T-Bolt SS clamp?

For the pro weld folks, did you lay the O/R H on top of the OEM catted H to lock-in on the H span, then get it welded? Hate to be too narrow or too wide on that H and have issues installing it.

What do y'all suggest? Go with the supplied clamp or get the 'H' welded?

I just used the supplied clamp...the car is really too loud to hear if it's rattling or anything.

I would recommend having it welded. When I used the clamp, I had leaking issues that you could hear with a set of Bassani mufflers out back. You can always try the clamp and see what kind of luck you have.

I had mine welded, I think the charged me like $7.50.

I had mine welded. The clamp that comes with the thing is rediculous. what you need to do is install the pipe and clamp it tight, then take it out and weld it. Make sure you put index marks on the pipe in case it moves/rotates before you weld it or it wont fit. I have a ton of pics on this, check it out here:

I had mine welded on the car a few weeks after install. Clamp was leaking big time. Just put it up on the hoist, and drove off 10 minutes later, cost me 20 bucks. MUCH better, though, no rattles and no noise.

Got if for sale now, though, won't need it with the turbo.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

And thanks, Dustin for the pics in the link, now I have a visual on what that clamp looks like. I can barely make it out, but it looks like the clamp is stamped 2 1/4".

Too bad Pypes doesn't provide a high quality clamp like the attached pics.

I may end up getting it welded, a bit more hassle test fitting and all, but it'll be worth it in the long run.

Well, that won't be until 2011. I'll just swap back in the OEM catted H, should be no big deal (maybe 45 minutes or so).

An hour's work vs 5 years of fun? I'll the fun for $170!

The other thing is we noticed that the stupid clamp that they provide is 1 size too big. Probably half the reason why people get rattles and leaks.

So that OD of the 'H' may be 2"? I know the system is advertised as 2 1/2" dia. Also, if you look at the pic from Brenspeed, they're using a wide band clamp?

For slip joints, clamps like these work awesome. You can get them at Summit. etc.

That looks pretty secure and way beefier than the supplied U-Clamp.

Now, if we only knew the 2 OD of the slip joints...

Our pipes are 2.5" diameter. I have several of these 2.5" clamps on my car and they work great. Never had a leak anywhere.

Yup. Hopefully it'll be in by next weekend.

I have enough baseline videos (with the FRPP Stingers), so I'll be sure to get some sound clips after the install (along with my usual pics and write-up).

I think that they should send the pipe with a better clamp. I too had the clamp, and then chose to weld it. My clamp was not a perfect "U" and actually pinched the pipe on one end causing it to not be round anymore.

If I am correct, the H portion is 2 1/4 on one side and 2" on the other.

I dunno why it would be that way. I have cut, welded, clamped and changed about every piece in the entire exhaust system, and everything is 2.5" dia.

On the Pypes off road pipe, the main long pipes are 2.5", and cross pipes are difinetly smaller, and one slips inside the other, so I'd say 2.25" and 2" are about right on the H cross pipe.

That's a strange design then, IMO. All of the slip fittings in my exhaust are 2.5"... the female end is 2.5" ID and the male is 2.5" OD.
