The Octane Debate.

I never understood buying $600 ish CAI/tuner setup to only add a mild tune so you can save a few pennies over the high-octane tunes that make the thing worthwhile in the first place
If money is so tight that you don't want to stretch the couple dollars extra at the pump, where is the $600 coming from? $30k car plus constant modifications and cleanings.... The CAI purchase is the price difference of over 60 fill-ups with premium... I'd skip a couple trips to Starbucks a month to hit 7-11 instead long before giving up my 93 race tune on my baby. Funny thing I see people complaining about the price of premium with more then a lifetime's difference in modification $$ already in their signature in the first place. duh. Everyone is so trained to be scared of gas prices you don't look at the rest of the stuff in life, nor put in to perspective. One thread "Look at my $2500 set of wheels", and next thread, "hey, thats $12 more per fill up!-blasphemy!" Hello, McFly!
If you don't utilize the highest available octane tunes with the kit, you wasted your money in the first place.

I hear ya. Glad someone else is saying it. It's not like the rise and fall of gas prices really affects you in the long run.

The meager 10 hp gain from using a 93 octane tune isn't worth it for a daily driver. Unless a CAI and tune will boost fuel economy by 1-2 mpg, I'm not interested.

I get 19-20 mpg in mixed driving with a high of 23-24 mpg on the highway (bone stock) using 87 octane. I'd like to improve the fuel economy as much as possible. The car is great as-is in terms of performance.

93 race is the only way to go. Car is totally different car than when I bought it. Its the way it should have been from the factory. I tried the 87 tune and it was a difference but no where near what the 93 race is. good luck

it does, if you can keep your foot out of it. if you do some searching you would figure it out, hell you could have researched it yourself and it would have cost you next to nothing to do it. Apparently all you saw though was omg an extra 15 dollars a month for gas on a car your most likely paying over 400 a month for in payments and insurance. its all relative.
you call it meager, but ppl spend hundreds of dollars for that 10hp gain, your not much of a enthusiast. dont knock it til you try it

I'm getting the 91 Race tune. There's no 93 around here.
How long does Doug take to send a tune? If it takes too long I'll go Brenspeed.

somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months, hes kinda like the cable company you never really know,
you just have to search these forums to see his reponse times lately.
Im ordering my stuff through brenspeed, tillman seems pretty responsive as well

**** that's really a shame.
I'd love to get a Bama tune, but if I have to wait 3 months for a generic C&L and Stingers tune (it's probably a generic combo Doug has seen many times before), then I might just go Brenspeed...
If I call Doug will I get help faster?

Does your body opperate better if you drink protein shakes, eat salads, and avoid KFC, or if you load up on McDonalds all day?
You D O get better fuel economy with using premium fuel. I got a 1-2mpg increase in fuel economy. I tested both tunes the same night.
87 Octane: 13.75
93 Torque: 13.53
It works.

I'm curious why you would even be reading posts in the "GT Performance and Tech" section which is pretty much dedicated to MODS.

I'll be ordering a CAI/tune from Brenspeed this week... will be using 93 performance as a DD.... just doing my research now deciding between C&L, JLT2, and C&L Racer intakes (sooo many differing opinions out there wish there was a consensus!)

in one of these threads there was a comparison test by 5.0 mag I think it was between diffrent cai and there was a definitive favorite in the article, I think it was jlt but dont quote me on that

Because I don't want to put words in his mouth I won't say his name but a reputable tuner once posted something to the effect that you just don't get enough room for adjustment with 87 octane so performance increase with a 87 octane tune won't net much if any performance gains, or atleast thats how I read it.
I don't really get how anyone who can afford a car that gets the type of mileage the Mustang gets can't or doesn't want to spend an extra $2 per fill up for gas. I think if your buying a tuner and intake, it would be silly to run a 87 octane tune. Thats just my opinion and everyone has diffrent reasons for doing things but doesn't make much sense to me. I'd keep the car completely stock if I wanted to run cheap gas, actually I would have kept my Civic if I were worried about fuel costs.
