O2 bung install

O2 bung install
How difficult/possible is it for a muffler shop to weld in an O2 sensor bung before the cat without removing the headpipe? I know the cats are way up close to the manifolds but I haven't actually crawled underneath to look. Is there enough clearance to work in there?

There didn't seem to be a ton of room under there (maybe because I don't own a lift). Anyways, I figure it would be difficult to weld the bung because you are supposed to weld the sensor ideally between the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock position on the pipe. Welding upside down is hard. Anyone else with more welding experience want to chime in?

I had one installed by Steeda and there isn't much room on top of the pipe , so they put it on the bottom side where the pipe turns upward to the cats. I think the reason they say to put it on the top side is that any moisture that collects would be on the bottom of the pipe and the sensor shouldn't set in a pool of moisture. Since it's on the upward slope the moisture runs down and doesn't collect on it. I've had it on the car about a year now and haven't had any problems with the sensor ...

The o2 bung is a threaded receptacle that they weld into your exhaust pipe upstream from your catalytic converter and ideally as close to the exhaust manifold as possible. It allows you to screw in a wideband o2 sensor so that you can get an accurate reading of your a/f ratio.

I'm just going to get my car dynoed so I'm not concerned about the moisture issue. BTW SteelTown, I think the Pirates and Steelers are moving in opposite directions. Maybe you can add "LETS GO BUCS" to your sig next season.
