Question for those of you that have installed the K&N air-charger-kit and have not tuned it! Any issues with this system, warning lights, dealer issues, car running lean and etc.? I would like to buy this system BUT do not want to have to buy a tuner. Thx~

Actually, this is a good question, since it has just recently come out, I was wondering if there were any new experiences.

I'm extremely interested in this question around K&N CAI also. Not to mention the HC Module (with or without it installed in the K&N). Seems unreal that many are coming from the Ford factory without the HC Module. Is there a different factory tune when no HC Module in in the car, or does it just make no difference if its installed or not?

Does the K&N allow for 87 octane fuel or is a higher octane required?

Wish we could get Ford and K&N to respond. Fat chance I'm sure.....

I can't comment on the K&N questions but I can tell you that the HC trap means nothing....it can be safely removed with no problems.

Had it installed Saturday and the car is running like a CHAMP. Sounds like a bat out of heck with the FLOWMASTERS bring up the rear.

It would be great for someone to dyno their car with the K&N and an exhaust as the olny mods (or just the K&N) to confirm the 15hp gain.

Also, I assume K&N is stating crank hp. If so, I wonder what % losses they are using?

If you go to K&N's website it has the dyno sheet listed that they ran. 15hp at 6k. After I get mine next week if I have some cash left over I'll get mine done and let y'all know, might be early next week before I can do it though.

This doesnt answer the question of the postee, but I think the K&N is good for those on a budget or who dont want to tune, but in my opinion the tunes are the best part of getting a CAI. The K&N seems pretty conservative.

The K&N uses all stock setting so you will want to run 87 octane.

I have had mine for over two months. Never tuned it, no flash. In fact, its the ONLY thing I have done to my car, as far as performance, and it runs beautifully. I still have my HC Trap.

She runs VERY smooth at higher speeds, smoother than she did before. I have NO warning lights of ANY KIND. I always run 87 octane, and she likes it just fine. Get a full tank in her (new tank!!! YEH!) and she GOES.

I heard Richard's (rrobello) at the last meet...and it sounds insane.

Someone needs to dyno their car with the K&N and a diablosport tune installed.

If this setup produces what the C&L, Steeda, and JLT systems (all w/ tune obviously) are doing; then we have the best CAI to date because-

1. Runs without a tune, 15+ hp
2. Runs with a tune, ?+ hp
3. Priced very competitively at $199

I am crossing my fingers to see what this set up will do.

At RPM Outlet they claim 28rwhp and 23rwtq with the K&N and a canned predator tune: http://www.rpmoutlet.com/05gt.htm

I'm considering this mod without a tune, but I'm concerned about this paragraph quoted from the installation instructions: "Note: This intake system is designed to use the factory hydrocarbon trap, failure to use the hydrocarbon trap will result in poor performance or possible engine damage may result".
My car was built at the end of April and Ford had quit putting the H/C trap in the cars by then. I'll email K&N about this and post their response when I hear back from them.

After reading numerous accounts of HC trap removal and great power gains for free, I removed mine. You can instantly feel a difference, at first it seems like you have more power because the car revs easier. Actually what happened was throttle response turned to zero. Removing the HC trap with no tune is NOT a good idea. I'm not sure how all these people are removing and saying that they've had no problems. It stinked all the power out of my car. This is probably not clear at all. Basically I wanted to say that removing the HC trap was a bad idea. I'm sure the case is different when you add a CAI, but removing the HC trap alone with no tune turned my car into a taurus. hope this helps someone

i do plan on ripping that hc trap out the second i have a tuner

Did you disconnect the battery for a while when you removed the HC trap?

I received the following response from K & N concerning cars that are built without a H/C trap.

Thomas,

If your car does not have the trap then there is nothing to worry about. It is primarily the vehicles that came with the trap that it is important that it be reinstalled.

Thanks for writing

Fred

OK let me get this straight. If there is a hydro trap in there then I should put it in the air-charger and if there isn't I shouldn't worry about it? Is the factory tuning these cars differently without the hydro trap?
