Newbie question regarding gears!
#1
Hi,
I read everywhere in this forum that people changing their gears to 4.10 or 4.30...
What is the effect of changing the gears?
Is it also possible on a auto transmission?
How much does it cost?
Sorry for my stupid questions...

about $500-600 installed
If you can drive 4.10s will lower your 1/4 mile times by about 3-5 10ths of a second and if the car wasn't speed limited they would lower your theoretical top speed.
It will raise your rpm on the highway in 5th gear by about 500RPM, just guessing as I have no idea what the gears are already in automatics, I'm thinking 3.31s, someone correct me if I'm wrong here..
4.30 would be more of the same.

4:10s would be your best bet over 4:30s which may be a bit agressive.
The 4:10s would better for all around street n strip use and get the results your looking for Heli999.You wont notice much dif in fuel miles but you'll have to re-calibrate speedo with a tuner..SCT or DP.
Hope this helps

I live in the STL area and cost of 4:10 and install was about $350.00. Labor prices in this area are about middle of the road. If you install the gears do a set of BMR non ajustable control arms because you will have wheel hop with these gears. My guy did not charge labor to install control arms as it was a simple job. Took maybe ten minutes at the most. I did not purchase parts from install shop as I had them long before I had the car but I will purchase all new install parts from him. What the heck Same price and he makes a few bucks on the parts.
