Need help choosing gears

So I want to finally upgrade from my stock gears and I need some advice on what to go with. My GT is mostly just a fun weekend driver, but want to take it to the track too. Right now it's just got the basic bolt ons, but eventually want to do cams and a supercharger if that makes a difference. Have also been looking at an aluminum driveshaft.

If you are gonna supercharge it I wouldn't bother with gears.

agree if you go FI in the next 18-24 months no reason to change gears unless you have the 3.31s but then the most I would go is 3.73 with the FI.

I got my 3.73 gears installed before I got my S/C and at the time wished I had gone to 4.10 gears. But once I got my S/C installed they're about right , the 3.55's would give better traction in 1st and 2nd though ...

If you have 3.55 gears I'd leave it alone with a blower.

Since I know you do have 3.55 gears, I would stay with them since you plan to go S/C.

Gears - by definition - are a torque multiplier. If you're going to add twin screw blower that makes a lot of low speed torque, then you won't need additional gearing.

However, if you plan on going with a centrifugal (which makes little low speed torque, but tons of high rpm horsepower), then you'll want tons of gear (4.10's or 4.30's, IMO) to get into the powerband easier.

Brian gives good advise. It's all about building a package. If you don't plan properly then your foundation for all other mods can be wrong. Decide on the type of SC'er you want then decide on the gear you need.

Well said.......though there are guys who still run 410's with twin screws and seem to have no problems. From what I have researched so far....the key here is to get some really good tires and some traction enhancing mods (i.e. rear/lower control arms).

I am thinking of going 410's and twin screw myself for the future. Can any guys running this combo chime in?

Ha ha ...4:10's and a twin screw is an awesome combo in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. But 1st and 2nd are pretty much useless. But this in only if you are a serious drag racer. On a street driven machine with no racing expectations it would be a hoot!!!!

My latest car has a twin screw and 3.73s.
I bought it for a daily driver.
An under 12sec. daily driver.
So, don't go by me.
Oh BTW... IT IS A HOOT.

Put in the 4:10's. You may never get a SC.

I'm also running 4.10s NA and love them, the car is plenty fast for me.

Just FYI...Motive makes a 3:90 gear set, that might be a better choice in some circumstances....American Muscle carries it.

I drove a new edge with 3.73s and one with 4.10s. I found the 3.73s to be not much better than stock and the 4.10s were a pita in the city. I went with 3.90s and couldn't be happier. All this talk about whiny gearsets well 99.99% of the time it's the install. .001 of an inch out and they will whine so install IS THE KEY. if I was in an auto I would go 4.10s all the way. Even 4.30s if I didn't have to shift. That would turn this car into a different animal. These motors are made to rev so honestly to justify the cost of doing the mod maximize your return in power to the ground so honestly pick the highest gear number you can tolerate. It will pay off in the smile department
