Is my clutch slipping? If so whats best clutch?
Is my clutch slipping? If so whats best clutch?
Hi there
I have noticed a problem with my car, let me explain:-
3rd gear, floor it 3000rpm and the car pulls and at 4000rpm its like the revs build a bit too quick, then drop a little and the car continues to accelerate.
In 4th gear its a little more pro-nounced, the revs will build around 4000rpm and then drop a little and then build again.
In 5th its the worse, floor the car at 2000rpm and the revs start going up real quick and the car hardly accelerates, letting off the accelerator the revs drop back down instantly.
So I think maybe my clutch is slipping?
Car was pushing around 450RWHP and all was fine, went to a smaller pulley and its now pushing 480RWHP and this problem has cropped up. Car has covered 34,000 miles on its standard clutch and has been supercharged for 25,000 miles.
So does it seem likely its the clutch?
If it is then I want to replace it with a new clutch and a lightened flywheel. However I want something thats proven and is fine for a street car driven everyday and it must feel like stock but be able to handle 500RWHP area.
Thanks!

Hi there
When I buy a clutch kit does it come with everything I need?
When it comes to lightweight flywheels I assume those dont come with clutch kit?
What kind of benefits does also fitting a lightweight flywheel have and how does it change drivability?
What does a stock flywheel weigh?

You are correct, the flywheels are sold separately unless you purchase a Twin-Disc clutch setup. Those usually include a Flywheel. Well most, McLeod has a twin-disc which reuses the stock flywheel.
Switching to an Aluminum Flywheel will give you less rotational mass which will make the car rev quicker. It will not affect driveability unless you have a 6-Puck Clutch Design. Steel is better for drag racing, but for street cars I am a fan of Aluminum Flywheels.
A stock flywheel will weigh about 30lbs, an Aluminum flywheel weighs about 10.
Hope that answers all your questions.
Do a Spec 3+. Stay away from lesser models, if you search around you'll read about plenty of problems with the 1 and 2, even the 2+. These cars are too heavy for anything less than a 3+ in my opinion. I've had my 3+ for a few weeks now with a steel flywheel and I love it.
Hi there
Well heard to many bad things about the Spec Stage3+ in regards to chatter and it been too on/off.
But the Spec SS-trim looks great, been a twin-disc setup and it comes with a lightweight ALU flywheel too. Comments are very much like stock feel and no noise so the Spec SS-Trim looks like it might be the one for me to go with and as it has the ALU flywheel included makes things easier.

Actually the Spec Stage 3+ is probably one the of the most popular Mustang clutches period. As a Spec distributor we sell plenty of Spec clutches. The most popular is a Stage 3+, out of the hundreds I have sold one has ever come back. The reason was the customer did not break it in and just romped on it from day one.
Now the Twin-Disc is a great setup, and if you have the funds it is probably the best option.
Also an aluminum flywheel does not make any more noise than Steel. Are you sure something is not rubbing?
