MGG shifter won't stay in 4th, Help!

I am installing the MGW shifter and when I got it all installed it won't stay in 4th. It just pops out of gear by itself. I tried different throw settings and loosened and retightened everything.

Any ideas...

When you say throw settings, did you make your adjustments underneath the car, or just to the height of the handle?

Also, you're not using the shift stop kit are you? Did you buy it new? The top of the shifter should be all black and not have two stainless steel plates on top.

Did you opt to install shift stops?

I don't know man, unless you somehow managed to not line up the body with the arm that connects and mounts to the transmission....... just a guess.

Also, there is no line on mine to show where the arm should be locked down.

No leftover parts?
You've used the washers where required and everything's tightened properly? Don't be afraid to tighten the bolt at the bottom of the shifter where the adjustments are made. Don't let the bushings scare you, you need to get that tight... but don't be stupid about it and break anything.
On the adjustment 'screw' from the underside, it's pointing the correct direction? There's an arrow on it, if memory serves that needs to point to the left (drivers) side of the vehicle. Don't get confused while you're laying on your back.
How many turns out did you unscrew it?

That was going to be my guess, but just that....a guess......

Well, I'm stopping for the night.
There are no left over parts. Maybe I didn't lock everything down right. I just need to rest and get a fresh start in the morning.

Well good luck, the first thing I'd do before I even grabbed a wrench is try to see what direction that arrow is pointing.

Tomorrow's going to be warmer anyways, and you can see better in the daylight.

Make sure you don't have the shift handle shaft adjusted so low that it hits the shifter base when going into 4th. This happened to me and I would get vibration in the handle in 4th gear like the transmission wasn't fully engaged into 4th. A quick raising of the shift handle solved the issue.

FIXED IT

I had the shifter back off the car when I got your suggestions so I'm not sure what fixed it. I just took my time with every bolt, made sure the arrow was pointed towards the driver, and that the shifter handle shaft wasn't hitting.

I just need to reattach the driveshaft, lower it down and test drive.

Thanks for the quick responses and help!
