Which manual aftermarket shifter is best ?
Which manual aftermarket shifter is best ?
Before I go buy a shifter ball from Grabberpony , I need to hear any and all thoughts related to anything as an up-grade in quality over the stock manual shifter for my ' 08 GT/CS . Please give me not only the pluses , but also what you don't like about your choices and what choice you would make if you could do it all over again .
Mgw Short shifter. Honestly, there is zero negatives.
Adjustable throw. Adjustable height, allows for various shifter *****. Solid. Very organized kit. A must have for any mustang. Have been very pleased to date with this mod.

+1 - MGW - Superior quality, materials, and workmanship. Plus it's adjustability is great. You can pick it up with your choice of threads as well. I went w/ the stock thread pattern so I could put the stock **** on if I wanted to instead of my kick-*** grabberpony.com ****.
I have the Hurst and I love it.
Pluses: 1.) Firm centering springs
a.) First to second is a pull toward you and down
b.) Second to third is really just a push forward
c.) You wont miss third
2.) Notchy feel is retro from my youth
3.) Chrome shaft and ball fit the retro style
Minuses: 1.) High rev shifts from 3rd to 4th are sometimes difficult
2.) Hardware is not rigid enough for very aggressive driving
My view on the Pro 5.0
Pluses: 1.) Smooth and firm
2.) Has bolt stops
3.) Beefy parts under car for rigidity
4.) Fits the stock shifter
Minuses: 1.) Seems to "wear in" and is stiff at first
2.) Play in shifter seems "loose" at times
3.) Doesn't feel like a value
All that said, I think the MGW may be the best of both worlds.
MGW makes great quality parts and has great service. I have plenty of other components from them. Based on the design and all the patents pending I believe they really did their homework.
+1 MGW if it is in your budget.

I'll throw in another vote for the MGW. I don't know if George is still sending out 2 sets of springs, but they made a softer set shortly after the shifter came out. Either way though, I love this shifter. The only other one I've tried was the Saleen short-throw adapter, which was just a block that went on the bottom of the shifter shaft. It was a good mod for $50, but you still basically had just the stock shifter.

Is there really that big of a improvement in going to a aftermarket shifter? I am a little intimidated on installing it in my GTCS compared to the ease of installing one in a 79-93 Stang.

I let GRAYPNY and CaliHPAddict both drive my car with the MGW, they have the Pro 5.0. Cali didn't really comment but GRAYPNY said he thought the 1-2 shift was cleaner on the Pro 5.0 but the 2-3 shift was better on the MGW.
Either I am getting used to the spring stiffness or they have mellowed out some in the last month but I no longer think about putting the car into 1st or 2nd, it just goes there. I don't miss shifts any more but I think that has to do with the short throw than anything else.

I have a Hurst and love it! The things I like about it are:
Never missed 3rd.
I like the notchy feeling.
I don't have to worry about adjustability.
I love the classic look!
Also, forgot how good the price was!
The things I slightly dislike are:
The only one I can think of is the noise (which can probably be fixed with dynamat)

It's a great shifter. You won't be disappointed.
