Lemont,
I ran my GTA's with the stock cats for about 1 year. They sounded great...no drone...no raspiness as long as you are running cats. It's a good setup!!

My guess is that the people with the Violators that are experiencing drone must have the polished version. While I don't mind drone, I am able to hear it quite easily. The magnaflow mid mufflers on my '05 drone and trumpet something fierce, but none with the Violators. The only thing I can think is that the polished ones drone, due to difference in the metal.

When I was running the GTA's with stock cats and Mac Prochamber is when the GTA's sounded their best. Than I went with the offroad Prochamber and it got louder and meaner sounding but not terrible. But when I went with the OBX longtubes it was over the top for me. Not the fault of the GTA's but I just put them in the wrong enviroment to make them sound good. Little changes in these exhausts system make a big different I have found!! And the GTA's are gone to a fella in upstate New York that will be keeping his stock cats so they have already found a good home.

What seems really interesting Scott, is whenever a chambered muffler such as GTA's, Flowmasters and MAC's, appear to sound their best when paired with either a Prochamber, or catted mid-pipe. As both a Prochamber and catted mid-pipe, seem to function almost like a resonator. Perhaps this is why there's very little, or no drone at all.

At any rate: I'm very glad that your GTA's have found a very good home

I happen to have the polished SS version, and haven't noticed any drone at all.

But then again, I'm still running them with my stock cats. So I really can't say for certain, as to whether or not they would drone with an off road H-pipe

I have a full stock exhaust with the polished Violators. They drone BADLY at 1500-2000 RPM. I wear earplugs while driving the Stang.

I guess it all depends and varies with each car? I would'nt normally expect that, but who knows...

Charlie,

During the first 6 weeks, I also noticed drone in the 1500-2000 RPM range. But once they became fully broken in, I haven't noticed any drone at all.

Unless of course I've become used to it, and just don't notice it anymore

If this is true than I can only ask you why? Lord knows I know that mufflers for these cars are expensive but I can't believe anyone should have to wear earplugs to drive their car. Not to mention being dangerous to boot. Are you teasing?

I like the sound of the Violators but not the drone. I also do not like the wind/road noise at speeds higher than 45-50 mph so I just plop in some ear plugs. I don't squish them in all the way, just enough to cut out some of the noise. I did this when I drove the Vic during the winter because the snow tires have a horrible whine at 50+ mph.

I am considering going back to the stock axle-backs on the Stang.

Charlie, if you do end up going back to the stock axle backs. You may also want to consider a MAC prochamber. I remember that when Scott was using a Prochamber with his stock axle backs, he didn't experience any drone at all. IIRC, he also has sound clips.

I don't experience any significant drone with the stock axle-backs, I'll probably just go back to the stock mufflers and keep the stock cats and stock H-pipe.
