Magnaflows vs. Pypes Violators vs. stock
Magnaflows vs. Pypes Violators vs. stock
I'm throwing on a set of Kooks LTs with catted x-pipe. My three choices for mufflers are:
Magnaflows
Pypes Violators
Stock
Can you guys give me some feedback on what I should expect from the different mufflers - taking into account the LTs. Thanks!

My Pypes Violators are too loud and drone like crazy at 1500-2000 RPM. I have heard that the drone is decreased when you go with off-road pipes.
I no longer desire the start the car in the garage with the windows down or the door open. The exhaust note is awesome but it's just too loud for me.

I just put on a set of Magnaflows with my OBX longtuges a few weeks ago. Read my story here. http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showthread.php?t=466783 I finally found my perfect exhaust. And I tried a bunch of combinations. What would your perfect exhaust sound like?

My ideal exhaust would be something that makes the S197 sound like it has raw power: an Aston Martin or Audi V8 race car. However, it should have zero drone, be street legal, and only be audible outside of the vehicle. In addition, it should cost less than $350 for a pair of full T409/T304 SS axle-back mufflers (none of the aluminized junk used on Flowmaster, Edelbrocks).

Then you want Corsa. Only problem is, they're about 2x as much as you want to spend.
I have the unpolished Violators. I had a bit of drone around 1850, but nothing like Metroplex describes. I don't know if that's a difference in the 2 different metals or what. But with my off road H, I have no drone. They are extremely loud, that's for sure. But with a catted X, they'd probably sound fantastic. They sound very similar to stock, just deeper and much louder. I've always been a fan of Magnaflows, but not on S197's. I have the Cervini's/Magnaflow exhaust on my '05 with off-road X and it trumpets, drones, and does everything but sound muscular.
I have a fox, but I have mac equal length headers, pypes x pipe with pypes violators...it sounds pretty good, and i havent experienced any drone sounds...I have never heard them on the modular motor though..

If I wear earplugs, the drone isn't a problem. The Violators gurgle while hot idling (mainly because of the 3 gallons of water it collects) and they can even "backfire" when the throttle is suddenly closed.

I know that sound.
I had the same sound out of my GTA's before I swapped them a few weeks ago for the Magnaflows!!Scott
Thanks guys - i realize that everyone is different.
I'm pushing 40 and don't want to get too crazy with the sound. I want something that is aggressive when I get on it - but not too obnoxious at idle.
Thinking about sticking with the stockers and then moving to Magnaflows if I want something more.

When I had first installed my Pypes Violators, I noticed very little drone in just the 1200-1700 RPM range. But now that they're fully broken in, I haven't noticed any drone at all

Hey Rocky,
I never experienced drone of any kind running the GTA's with the offroad Prochamber or with the OBX longtubes. They just got raw and nasty sounding. FWIW I was within seconds of purchasing the Violators from Brenspeed. I was talking to Seth at the time and once I explained what I was looking for he said the Magnaflows would be a better match for me.

I remember how much you had liked the GTA's, and was sorry to hear they wound up becoming raw and nasty sounding. At any rate, I'm very pleased that everything has worked out well with the Magnaflows, and that you're pleased with them.
In the meantime, thanks again for clearing everything up.

Rocky,
As most things are in life this muffler game is an ongoing saga.
When I was running the GTA's with stock cats and Mac Prochamber is when the GTA's sounded their best. Than I went with the offroad Prochamber and it got louder and meaner sounding but not terrible. But when I went with the OBX longtubes it was over the top for me. Not the fault of the GTA's but I just put them in the wrong enviroment to make them sound good. Little changes in these exhausts system make a big different I have found!! And the GTA's are gone to a fella in upstate New York that will be keeping his stock cats so they have already found a good home.
