Hey all! I am in the market for some drag radials and as an average, I have found/read that the Mickey Thompson Drag radials are the best, followed by BFG, then Nitto's. I will only be using these tires when at the track! To my point...Someone suggested I get 275 40 17's. I've been looking at wheels also and am not too sure which size wheel will be best for these tires. I've looked briefly online but wanted to get a general feedback about the size and such. I will have 4.10's come next week. Does anyone NOT recommend this size. Does anyone know if there is a wheel out there that looks like the factory bullitt wheels but ones that will carry this tire? Thanks for the help!

Someone here on the forums has done that. I hope they come back with an answer for you if not I will try to locate it for you. I do remember that he purchased tires and wheels from the tire rack.

I've been searching. Maybe I need to try different wording to broaden the search! Thanks!

AFS or is it called AFR? they make the larger bullits. Also, M/T et streets are the best, but radials wise the BFG G-force is the best

I want the best hooking tires possible. I will ONLY be using them at the track-well, atleast driven to the track. I will research the AFS/AFR. If I'm going with 275/40/17's, should I use a 17x9 wheel? I thought I read somewhere that this tire size will not fit on a 17x9 wheel.

I am still looking for you too. You will need to give him a few days to respond. Monday you could call the tire rack and say you wanted the same wheels and track only tires they sold to another 05 Mustang owner. I am sure this guy did a full research on the tire issue as they were high $$$ He posted a photo also.

I saw that thread. The Boss has 18" wheels though. I was wanting to keep it 17". I wouldn't mind using 15" but I'm not about to change the rotor and brakes just to fit a 15" wheel. I've been searching all night and can't find squat.

Finally, I found the wheels here!
http://www.mustangtuning.com/2005-anthraci...7x9-wheels.html
I was using the wrong words for my search. The magic word is...
Anthracite. Well, now I just need to make sure the 275/40/17 will fit these wheels and need to make sure these tires are the best size for the 1/4 mile.

Will the 275/40/17 fit a 9" wide rim....Yes they will.
Will it be enough tire for you with 4.10's, I don't know. I doubt it. I put a set of them on mine as a experiment. I will have 4.10's installed next week and will be able to give you some ideas at that time, if you are still interested..

I like the big ones. I think the Hog has the right idea. I don't want to leave the line in a cloud of smoke with the 4:10s. I just want to get to the other end real fast. You already said you were not going to run them on the street even if I does look cool with those big donuts on the rear. You wouldn't want anyone to think you was the bads a-- in town. Just joking

18" wheels won't keep you from leaving the line in a cloud of smoke with 4.10's installed. Give us a little time and we will come up with a good combination.

169Stang,
The M/T ET Street and ET Street Radial both call for 9 inch wide rims, but these guys are running ET Streets on stock 8 inch wide rims and seem to be doing quite well

BTW, where are you getting the 4.10's installed?

I'll try to help you out here. I ran a set of 275x40x17 Nitto's on a '98 Cobra w/3.73 gears and 17x9 Cobra 'R' wheels, never had a wear problem and wished I had 4'10's because the 3.73's made me have to shift into 4th about 100ft. from the finish line in the qtr.. Ran that combination for about a year, it was my daily driver. Nitto's are a good street drag radial but with too much gear my experience you'll blow the tires off on the starting line. Traded that car in and bought a '01 GT, bought another set of Nitto's, same size, put them on the factory 17x8's and wore out the middle of the tire in about 4 mos.
I never did find the right tire pressure. The wider wheel will give you more of a contact patch on the road.

Here's what I've experienced at the track. Note: take into account that I do need more seat time....I have had my best runs at the track with 36psi in the stock tires (13.51@104mph). I've have my worse runs at 25psi (13.75@103). I've heard that having more sidewall on the tire is better? Can anyone validate or correct me on this one. To get more sidewall, I was trying to stick with 17" wheels. If going to 18" wheels is better to stick more rubber to the track, then I'll do that. I really don't care about what it looks like since it's only at the track. I also seen some anthracite bullitt wheels in a deep dish 17x10.5. Then maybe a 315/35/17 tire. This size is relatively the same height as the 275/40/17 but in a much wider tire. If they stick out, I'll just have to put on more Zaino's to keep the rubber from being a bear to get off the bumper.

I went ahead and ordered the gears from the Dealership and have heard that their rear end guy is really good. I might just get them installed there. Roughly $525 for the gears and install. Seems to be the going rate for a gear install. The service manager did tell me that the gears would have no warrenty because they are from FRPP.
Those guys over at JMS did catch my attention! I thought it was funny that their write-up states stock tires. I guess if you consider stock dimensions, then your okay with that. I tend to lean towards...if you don't have the Pirelli's on there, then they're not stock. I may run into a size issue with the limited size's with the M/T's.

They actually say "street tire", not "stock tire". I'm not sure if they intended people to misread it or not, but it definately is easy to misread.

I still have stock gears but not sure how much longer I can resist . . . . . .

Kind of an interesting read, and if you scroll to the bottom (an actually throughout the article) there are quite a few links to companies manufacturing rims (wheels) that you might like.
