I want the exhaust to sound aggressive.

Price is a concern. I would like to mod the back end only. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Flowmasters, had them for a week and a half now, sound great and are getting louder as they break in, after resetting the computer, I def feel a power increase with the exhaust! I've gotten lots of thumbs up for the exhaust sound by motorists and neighbors. The tips look fantastic!! Paid $245 for the kit...

I know a lot of people have the SLP Loudmouths now and I'm curious. Is anyone having any problems with authorities since the loudmouth exhaust has no mufflers? Not having mufflers is pretty easy to see, rather than no cats or something. I'm really debating the loudmouths, or something like it, but I've been pulled over once already for nothing major, the last thing I want is for that to happen again and have him say, "Where the heck are your mufflers?"

Some states are falling under the law that aftermarket exhausts are illegal. I just spoke to a work assoc. who is retired sgt. in the police force. He said that PA just fell under that law that any aftermarket exhaust is illegal. From what he told me, it varies on the state you live in, I hope it doesn't come over to NJ

Alot of folks swear by Bassini - not sure how about the cost and if its an axleback only.

I think the loudmouths may be too loud for a vert. You can't roll the windows up and tune it out. I don't mind hearing the exhaust when I excellerate but I don't want to hear it (as much) on the freeway at 2400rpm.

Perhaps flowmasters or similar would be better.

Flowmaster has one of the worst 2000 RPM drone sounds. I have heard the SLP and it does produce a slight popping sound when reving but I can not say about the freeway drone. Corsa has an agressive sound and does not have the drone. Down side, they cost more.

A guy I work with has Ford racing shorty headers, the Bassani X pipe that bolts to the stock cats, and the stock mufflers. It sounds really good. A little bit louder than stock at idle but really opens up at WOT. Plus the best thing is it's totally 100% legal!!!

If you want aggressive proven performance and sound. You have to go to bassani. No they are not cheap, but you usually get what you pay for. Bassani's are guaranteed for life, high quality stainless steel. I have the competition catalytic converters, xpipe, and axleback system and Oh my god. I will never try another dealer again. Look around, there are specials all over, including are parts people here. If you get them, you will love them. Oh yah, no check engine lights and replaced all that stuff. So safe to say, you shouldnt have any issues. Good luck on what you decide.

Have to agree with sodaman on the Bassani's. I bought just the axle-backs for $560 and I have to say it's already soo loud that I can't imagine what the high-flow x-pipe would do to it. The quality is also flawless and trust me, everyone that's heard my exhaust has said that it's bad a@#!! And as far as drone goes I don't notice anything bad and it's not annoying inside the car either at any speed. Be warned though, you'll probably have a decrease in gas mileage from revving the engine all the time!

NickS, with my set up, I am actually seeing 30-40 miles to the tank better gas mileage. I also have no CEL's so I am pretty confident I am running good. I will be getting a tune eventually, I am told my whole set up, with compcats, xpipe, and axlebacks is 40 hp tuned, 20 hp not tuned, so I hope to see what actually happens when I tune this bad boy.

Sodaman, I understand the better gas mileage, I just mean that I know since I've had mine on I've been accelerating hard and constantly revving the engine=worse mileage. Under normal driving conditions though, heck yes I bet it improves mileage!! And on the horsepower, 5.0 Mustang did an article on your exact setup, came out with 40.9 hp increase tuned and 18.8 untuned, so you'll definitely be happy with your numbers!! Good luck man, gotta love this exhaust!!

I have to say that the best exhaust mod for the money would be to go to a muffler shop and have them remove the original mufflers, and replace them with stainless pipes going into 3 1/2 inch double walled chrome tips. this will cost you about $150 at most good muffler shops and it is basically the SLP loudmouth setup. the SLP (or basically muffler delete) does not drone like some of the other manufaturers mufflers, and offers a great performance sound at at a great price, not to mention reducing any constriction from baffled mufflers. most performance mufflers are straight through (as in you can look through them and see out the other side) such as magnaflow or dynamax and they reduce restriction as well as add a larger sound chamber for sound dissipation. mufflers vary in sound depending on the size and shape of the chamber used, and some (fart can mufflers or resonators) actually use baffles and thin aluminum resonators (kind of like speaker cones) to modify the sound of your exhaust. Mufflers that employ this baffle methodology to tailor the resonant properties of the muffler often result in a restrictive exhaust that can actually cost you horsepower and torque depending on your specific modifications, not to mention inducing drone at certain rpm's. I also heard that Saleen has discontinued the use of some hi-perf exhaust (was it bassani?) citing quality control issues. I would not be afraid of the SLP or similar setup if you are a vert driver, it is actually pretty much void of any real "drone", is pretty quiet at cruising speed, and really brings the old school muscle car sound out of the car.

anyway...whatever you do end up doing just make sure you are not going to hurt your HP or Torque in the long run. make sure the exhaust is non-restrictive, and try to get some mufflers that are straight through.

my .02 anyway

best of luck to you!!

oh and by the way... alot of these aftermarket bolt on exhaust kits are so expensive because they are pre-bent using a jig for the '05 stang. sometimes a good exhaust guy can give you a way better price on a custom bent system, besides it supports your local economy

Have SLP and love it... but in a vert I dunno. Especially if you plan on getting x-pipe and headers later on.

Well in regards to the cancellation of exhaust by saleen, I believe I saw the article listed here somewhere, and it was borla listed in the article, not bassani. I swear by them, they are awesome.
