Long Tube Header & 02 Extensions

I just bought a set of JBA long tube headers. I've found plenty of information about the install process, but I have a question about the 02 plugs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are 4 02 sensors right? 2 up near the stock manifolds and then 2 later in the exhaust in the cats.

The headers have two 02 sensor plugs. Which ones do I use? Do I get extensions and use the front wires or or just use the rear set.

And I assume that if you only use two have to have your tuner turn off one set.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.

You'll want to use the 2 forward O2 sensors in the headers. Have your rear O2 sensors turned off in your tune.
If your headers have a O2 bung in one of the primaries, use that location.

Stock uses 4 O2 sensors, like you described.

Larry knows his stuff. As far as the needing the extensions goes it all depends where the bungs are welded in you headers. You can get the extensions a Brenspeed if you need them. And it is the front O2 sensors you want to install in the headers and the rears are not used and turned off in you tune.

That's what I thought, but just wanted to make sure if I needed to order the extensions. Thanks for the feedback guys

Have you got the headers yet? My long tube Bassani's came with the extensions, so I would think your's would too. Also, ask your tuner about the open loop/closed loop thing of the upstream O2 sensors. You will still get a MIL if the tuner doesn't take care of that. Since the sensors will be farther away from the engine they won't heat up as fast and will set off your MIL, so I think they keep the front O2's in closed loop for longer(I think). I don't know if that makes any sense to you but I have read about guys that had MIL eliminators on their downstream O2's and still got the MIL because of their LT's.

IT's called "transport delay," and your tuner can adjust it for you if it's off. The computer monitors the changes it makes in fuel timing (dwell) via the front O2 sensor, and if it takes too long for the change to become apparent (like because the O2 sensor is a couple of feet further away!), the computer gets a bit petulant and goes off in a corner and pouts.

Either way, you will need a new or updated tune file, as the headers will pull you towards the lean side of things.

I have the headers already, but they didn't come with the 02 extensions. I ordered the JBA Silver Ceramic coated from Stage3Motorsports.com

Got them for $779 which is a lot cheaper than anywhere else. Lower price might be because they didn't include the extensions.

I am currently just using a BamaChips mail order tune for my C&L intake and Bassani exhaust.

I'll be doing the install myself, going to take my time since the car is in storage right now anyways during the cold weather. Once the weather breaks I'll head up to Livernois Motorsports for a custom tune and dyno session.

Does anyone have suggestions on where to buy the O2 extensions from?

Also, what length is needed?

I couldn't find it orginally under the 05+ products, so I asked for other places that sell them. Brenspeed has them listed under 1996-2004 model products.

Brenspeed has the extenders for the 05-08's. Thats where I got mine. Link;
http://www.brenspeed.com/mustang_46/HXpipes.html

Some brand of headers offer a O2 bung up high in 1 of the primaries, others just offer it in the collectors(like mine). If your headers have the bung in a primary & it's up high, you might not need extenders. You will if it's in the primary. Just use the original front O2 sensors, you'll not be using the rear. Like was mentioned, your tune will need to have more of a 'delay' if your O2 sensors are in the collector. Also specify a O/R H or X. That will get the rear sensors shut off.

Larry correct again!!!!!! This is also where I got mine. If they are too long for your application you just tie them up with wire ties. No big deal!!!!

Thanks guys for clarifying about the delay. Bamachips did my tune, and I haven't had any problems so far with LT's and O/R X.

I ordered the set from Brenspeed. I wanted to make sure and have the longer ones just in case. Don't want to spend the money and come up short.

The JBA headers only have the 02 bung in the collectors. And I have the bassani off road x-pipe so it looks like i'll just have to turn off the rear 02 sensors when I get the tune updated.

Didn't see it mentioned anywhere, you will need to trim one of the ears off on the plug from the exentensions. The manufacturer has not added an exact patch for the S197. There is no problem with this and the plug stays connected fine.

Ben is right about this. It takes about 5 seconds with a razor knife to do this. Very easy!!
