I have just over 300 miles on my 05 GT and have had a knocking noise under light acceleration between 2000 and 3000 RPM since new. I seems like the knock is less pronounced when I go to full throttle but the exhaust noise might be covering it up. I thought i would see if it went away as the car broke in but it doesnt seem to be getting any better. The noise sounds very mechanical and doesnt sound at all like spark knock. Any input would be appreciated.

Are you talking about a slight gravelly noise? Many people report that the 5spd manual has a bit of a noise that is noticeable in 1st and 2nd under light acceleration where the exhaust and road noise aren't drowning it out. The noise I refer to isn't a loud KNOCK, it's a slight ticky irregular gravelly sound.

The gravely noise mentioned above might be what i am hearing. My car is a manual. Is there a known fix for this noise? Is it an early indication of an upcoming problem?

I've heard that this Tremec just sounds that way. Doesn't bother me, it's really faint.

I just installed a pair of Magnaflow mufflers and 4" tips on my '05, and when I accelerate, I hear (and feel) a real deep rumbly noise. It gets louder and stronger the harder I push on the gas. Is this normal?

Is it also accompanied by wild swinging of the needles on at least 2 of your guages? If so, my car is doing the same thing.

Sometimes I see red and blue lights behind me when this occurs....

Yeah, the swinging needles are another symptom... wonder if I need to get this looked at.

On a funny note... speaking of red and blue lights... the first week I had my car, I pulled up next to a State Trooper one night at a red light (he was in one of their suped-up Crown Vics). He had me roll down the window and was asking about the car, telling me it was the first one he had seen, etc... Well, we were both in the front of our respected lanes, and he told me to floor it when the light turned green. I was hesitant... but trusted the guy. So, when the light turned green, I floored it. Didn't know at the time he asked me to do this that he was going to floor it himself. So, I basically raced a cop... how many can say that? So, basically I smoked him... there was only a few hundred feet up to the next light, so I might have gotten up to about 60 (in a 45 I believe). Then he turned right off at the next light. Gave me a thumbs up as he passed. Pretty neat story. Seriously though... haven't you had almost a feeling of invinsibilty driving around in this car. Like, what cop in his right mind would pull you over, other than to ask about the car and then let you go maybe with a warning. Maybe it's because I know the local judge and can get tickets fixed if needbe, but I get that feeling. Will probably go away in another few weeks.

Now that's a neat story. At least now we know we can outrun the cops. :nono:

umm local dyno here put one of hte local PD's crown vics on the rollers. A whoping 193rwhp. They are heavy slow cars compared to a GT or any sports car.

I have many police friends so I can also say they are slow not based off dyno numbers

Back to s197pilot's post.

I would defintely take it in just for them to take a look at. Take the service manager for a drive in it and make him hear the noise. Or better yet, a drivetrain tech who doesnt have budgets to worry with. He'll give you a better opinion.

it could be the normal Tremec noises (throwout bearing etc) or it could be also a slight knock in the motor (i.e. pinging). You may want to try running a higher grade of gas for a couple of tanks worth and seeing if that makes a difference.

I can confirm without a doubt that a standard Crown Vic Police Interceptor is heavy and slow. In fact a good driver in a Pinto could probably leave us behind, but we usually end up chasing bad drivers and road spikes help alot.

Good post... I also have a certain noise right around 2200-3000 RPM. For the life of me, I cannot describe it though, it really isn't a pinging or knocking noise. It has been there since day 1, so I just brushed it off as a normal engine noise, since it wasn't a typical noise I have ever heard before.

Let me know what you find out if you take it to the dealer.

Thanks,

Mike

Make sure if you take it to the dealer, that they do NOT retard the timing as part of the "fix." This is part of their SOP for fixing knocking on the 1999+ GTs. You want the problem fixed, not the power of your car lowered!

I took my car to the dealer today and they said they spoke to ford about the knocking noise. Fords solution was to change the oil and have me drive it for 1000 miles. They said that if the noise didnt go away after 1000 miles to bring it back. I anticipate that i will be taking it back in a month or so with the same noise. On the bright side, i got a free oil change out of it.

I have a bit of a gravely noise as well. It's also coupled with a sound in the interior, coming from around the shifter, that sounds like the vent is on when it isn't. Anyway, 1st to 2nd just seems to mechanical sounding, not very smooth. I have only had my Car for three days now so I might be able to explain the sounds that I'm hearing better after a little more driving. B)

I have the same sound from my automatic at lower speeds. It is more when I let off the gas and let it decelerate. I’m going to ride it out and see what happens. I’m about to install pipes so I won’t be able to hear it anyways.
