I don't think the 05 brakes are so bad? Well maybe compared to my GSXR-600, but that's 400lbs and has 2 12in rotors and 2 4-pot calipers just on the front wheel.

The mustang brakes have certainly gotten better over the years, anybody drive a 87-93 5.0 with stock brakes? 11in rotors, single piston with drums out back.

I switched from the narrow, hard Pirellis (treadwear 700, width 235) to soft-compound Kumhos (treadwear 280, width 255), and that alone made huge difference in stopping distances.

The pedal is still a little soft and difficult to modulate. An aggressive, Hawk-type street pad would provide a lot more "grab," but there aren't a lot of choices yet.

More serious hardware -- stainless lines, slotted rotors, race pads, etc. -- won't make much difference unless you do track days or a lot of mountain driving. And they'll make things worse when they're cold, which would be most of the time.
Good point on aftermarket brake pads!! I switched out my stock LS pads for aftermarket pads and while they were great in the hills - 95% of city driving they were less effective as they didn't work real well until heated up.....all in all I wish I left the stock LS sport pads on....live and learn I guess...

HotLap -- which pads did you put on your car? I am looking at a track event next month and have not been able to find a set of aftermarket pads.

Thanks.

Yes they are certainly better than the 79-93's but it doesn't stop as good as my '03. Yes, the brakes are bigger in the '05, but so is the car.

Porterfield just completed testing and released Pads for the 05; no part numner yet, just calling them 05 Mustang Pads. Pricy but the R4-S compound makes great pads (Front-$179, Rear-$119). Porterfield make and rebadge for several "Race Distributors".

Any non-track pads out there? I remember reading (it might have even been in this thread) about a guy who said he could tell his "track" pads were worse than a good set of street pads because they never really got heated up unough. I do some "spirited" driving sometimes, but I'm sure I wouldn't be able to keep a set those pads hot enough to do their job.

Well they aren't bad compared to a car nearing two decades old, but compared to it's modern competition they aren't spectacular, or even that great.

Just ordered a set of R4-S for the Stang.

$159 Front and $110 Rear.

Description of the pads:

R4-S High Performance Street and Autocross
For high performance and heavy-duty street conditions. Perfect for prolonged everyday street use while also being capable of tolerating the most severe street use without any fade. Rotor friendly of course. The R4-S friction level will give you an impressive increase in stopping ability with very minimum pedal effort. R4-S compound has the absolute lowest noise and dust levels, far below OEM equipment or any other high performance brake material. Good for autocrossing, some drivers schools, solo events, and rally’s. The R4-S compound is available for virtually any vehicle sold in the US. We also offer the R4-S in pad sizes for competition type calipers that are used under street driven conditions.

Should work fine for light track duty and everyday street.

Porterfield

Thanks for the info,

Bill

I will wait for Performance Friction to come out with a street pad. Hopefully, they come out with their 01 or 03 Compound for the track.

I might have to order these, since I don't know of any other pads available. See any SS brake line kits out yet?? I have a track event I want to go to soon.

I installed the Steeda lines last weekend. Nice build quality. Also flushed the brake system and put in Super Blue fluid. If you get the Steeda lines just make sure all the connections are tight. After I installed parts of lines were leaking. Just had to tighten them up and everything was fine.

Bill,
Let me know how you like those pads. I read a little more about them and am concerned that they will not last on the track. My take on the R4-S is that they are a high performance street pad, which is meant for limited track use. I am going to email Performance Friction and see if they can get me some 01 or 03 compound pads. I also need to buy some Nitto NT-555RII's and some 9" Cobra rims for the track.

That's a bit more than I am willing to pay right now before exploring the limits of the OEM system with race pads. I will probably eventually do a BBK, but it will be custom using AP Racing Calipers

As big as the brakes are on the '05, I wouldn't think a big brake kit would be necessary unless maybe you're doing some road racing.

If you just wanted better braking ability / better feel then you could easily get there with some street performance pads, DOT4+ brake fluid, and steel braided brake lines.
