This is in the installation manual. Is it true, or B.S.?

(Sorry if this has been discussed, search feature doesn't like "K&N")

22. Vehicles that come equipped with
Hydracarbon trap, place the Hydrocarbon
trap into the filter adapter as shown.
NOTE: This intake system is designed to
use the factory Hydrocarbon trap, Failure
to use the Hydrocarbon trap will result in
poor performance and possible engine
damage may result.

Thanks!

I didn't even think Ford was putting the HC traps in anymore. My car is a year old today, and it didn't come with one.

It never ceases to amaze me the junk that Ford dreams up to put on its engines (same thing with the Charge Motion Plates that block airflow intake I also plan to remove).

Luck fully somebody at Ford realized HC trap was worthless and removed sometime in late 2005 model year. My 2006 didn’t have it- get rid of it!

Nope, mine was built in October of 04, came with the trap, ran the K&N Intake without it, it runs fine!

I figured it was BS. Just got done putting it in, along with some new Flowmasters. Sounds Good!

The HC trap is an emissions part. K&N says their CAI doesn't need a tune. If you remove the HC trap, you need to tune to adjust for the little bit of leaning out that the removal will cause. SO.....K&N's CAI will need a tune, IF you have a HC trap and remove it. It just goes against their claim of "no tune needed."

That makes sense 169stang. Thanks for the info.

So, will I do damage it driving it a little lean? (with no tune) Should I go back out and put in back in?

I ran K&N for several months after taking out the H/C trap - no tune. I'm certain the MAF can adequately compensate.... leastwise I didn't experience any codes that some folks have noticed with other CAI's.

Neither would I, I believe they restrict some air at lower rpm's to make more low end torque.

i took my hc trap out weeks b4 my k&n arrived ... no issues and no retune needed for either step. the only issue is then you take the HC thing out, it makes a mess of white powder that you need to unsure you get out of there (wet paper towel).
