Hi all,

I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a JLT CAI/Tuner combo, but I just noticed that there doesn't seem to be any type of heat shield with this setup to at least partially block some of the engine heated air..

I'd assume the air would be hot enough seeing as how the pipe is metal, but any little bit would help right? Am I a crack smoker, or does it matter?

Thanks again!

Thanks for the info.. They even suggest the use of a heat shield in their CAI setup: "the coolest inlet air source, are the keys to making useable power. We perform engine inlet-air-temp studies when developing each application to determine the coolest location for sourcing inlet air. In addition to this, we determine the safest location for the inlet source to protect it from highly dusty conditions and water. To this end, we provide a stainless-steel heat shield to help minimize heat soak into the inlet area, as well as to provide protection from dust, dirt and mud."

So, that said, are there aftermarket heat shields that folks w/ the JTL are using? I'm basically going with JTL because of the color matching. I haven't found any other CAI setups w/ that added customization.

Although, after browsing some of their pics in the gallery http://216.119.83.47/gallery.php?cat=200 it looks like there is some sort of minor shielding around the filter, no?

There is a heat sheild that is black plastic and blocks heat from the engine side only. Better air flow is better than no air flow from what I understand.

Thanks for all the help guys. I went ahead and put my order in for the Kit w/ the SCT x2 tuner. Apparently, the filter for these kits are out of stock. I'm not too worried because he sent me an email saying they should be back in stock this Wednesday. It'll ship immediately after.
Sounds like a plan to me.

No you don't need to upgrade to premium fuel but you do need a tune. If you are getting a tune you might as well upgrade to 93 octane to get the most of your mods. You can get a save 87 octane tune for this mod however you will not be getting the same potential power out of it.
As far as the heat shield goes. The one that came with mine bolts up right behind the air filter. Here is a thread with my install including pictures and details about the tune:

You can order the CAI and tuner combo directly from JLT. Personally I ordered only the CAI from JLT b/c I had a custom SCT tune done. So I bought my tuner through the guy doing my tune.

go with a 87 octane and 93 octane(if it is available in your area). I will retune with the 87 for long trips and such. otherwise use the 93.

I use the 93 octane tune but it is good to have the 87 tune incase you get a bad tank of gas. Basically that means you get 93 but it is not as good of quality so the octane rating is not really 93. It will cause a knock in your engine. Put the 87 tune in and run it until you can re-fill the tank with good 93. Then put your 93 octane tune back in.

I went straight to the source, With matching Satin Silver paint it was all said and done for ~$615.00.

That's the way to go IMO. Go direct to JLT. They were very helpful to me. Check out the website and give them a ring if you have any questions.

Only you can answer that question

as far as the heat sheild goes......... yes, it is better to have a colder inlet temp, but there is so much airflow under these hoods already that I don't think having the heat shield is really going to benefit one way or the other.

I personally choose to go without, IMO it looks a little less crowded in the engine compartment
