you only need to remove the positive side. leave disconnected for 20 minutes.

you removed the large red wire on the fender side of the battery...........The vertical 10mm bolt, and pulled off the terminal? after disconnect there is no power inside the car, lights no work? if this is the case you have some freak car. the steps to do this are in the woners manual.

Yeah, exactly - unscrewed the bolt, took the red terminal off, made sure it wasn't touching anything - go back in the car, lights, radio, cd player, remote lock/unlock, etc., all still works - and continues to be working 2 hrs later. WTF??

you only need to dissconnect one battery terminal positive or negetive to dissconnect power.
if you dissconnect a terminal and still have power you either
1. dissconnected something other than the battery
2. have a second source of battery power such as a large cappacitor used for big aftermarket sound systems installed in your car. (the shaker might even have a capacitor)
I'm not sure if a capacitor would really have enough stored energy to run lights and stuff for long but they do store enegry like a battery.
OK, so can someone write out "How to Disconnect the Negative Side for Dummies"? It appeares to be crimped in to the terminal, which is in turn bolted to the battery... I can't figure it out.
You must have a connection none of us has. Mine just has one metric nut to loosen. Sometime its better to leave things alone when you do not have a clue than screw it up. Battery notation After battery is disconnected I turn on a light or open a door and no more memory in clock radio or what ever. Ford tech told me that. Have not tested it yet.

Pic to come...
OK, here are a couple pictures.
I'm nervous about my stupidity being pointed out to me...
... but - look at the negative terminal. The copper wires are "crimped" into a plate that held under a metal bracket which is bolted and pinned into the battery - I can't figure out how to disengage the terminal.
The positive side has a simple nut holding the terminal to the plate (rather than being "crimped" in). The ground wire is also held by a simple bolt - but I didn't take a pic.

While I'm at it - hope no one minds - I'll throw a few pics up from last Friday when I was having work done on her - gears installed, x-pipe, steeda UD pulleys and dyno'd.

X-pipe - was going to do it myself, but crawled under the car and saw I'd need to cut the stock tubes behind the cats. Didn't have the tools or clearance to do it myself, so I just had them do it. Combined with SLPs, it really adds a deeper, more throaty note, and I can feel it rumble under my feet under acceleration. Not too loud or obnoxious. I'll try to load a sound clip at some point.
