im confused about tuners....

so, most of the cai's require a tune. understood

when you buy a tuner what type of system is it? is it like a piggyback where you leave the thing in your car?

i would assume you get the actual tuner, comes with the custom tune in it, plug it into the car via the can bus, reprogram the car, unplug it and go.

im just confused as to how all this works.

so if you want a different tune, how do you get it? the company emails it to you? then you dl it to the tuner?

could you use a laptop to tune the car? is there software available?

someone fill me in here....

any info is greatly appreciated....
i would like to get a cai someday and tune the car a little....

As I understand its not a piggyback system where you have to leave it connected. You use the tuner to reflash the on board computer and then remove it. You get some "canned" tunes with the tuner and can order better ones from some very skilled tuners advertised here. They are emailed and downloaded to the tuner and then the car. As for a laptop that will tune the car directly, I've never heard of it, I don't even think they have a USB to OBDII connection in existence. It would be amazing if they did, and it should be very possible if someone put thier mind to it, all a tuner does is reflash the EPROM.
Lastly, dont forget a CAI with your tune, they go hand in hand really.

Try this a read, when I had my 05 GT I was worried but then after about 1.5 years I got an 07 GT/CS and I then got a Bama SCT tuner from Doug , just plug it read the car first make sure it matchs then upload what of three tune and Smile but USE EXTREME care as I put in a 93 race tune and I will only go to stock before I ever take the car in for service then re read incase they changed it if they DID NOT reload & smile. Heck its this easy I let my 11 year old son load & unloadfor me.

Try these threads on tunes:

Also search "CAI" on the performance forum and you'll find more then you ever needed to know about intakes and tunes. Most of the discussions on tunes are in the CAI threads. Stick with the member recommended tuners and you'll be fine (bamachips/brenspeed/tillmanspeed/etc....)
