ok guys I really need some feedback from you if you own the comp plus

I installed mine 10 months ago... and I love the thing...

BUT,


over the last 2 months or so I have noticed that the shifter has been gaining VERTICAL SLOP

as of now it has about 1/8" of up and down slop in it.... it is still very tight and notchy for shifts, side to side and front to back there is no difference, but up and down there is some play...

lift up and down on your shifter and let me know if you guys have this same issue...
mine has started rattling because of this slop and its driving me nuts

i took my console apart and the body of the shifter is bolted good to the chassy of the car, not loose there... and looking at the shifter, the shaft that goes into the pivot ball moves up and down, the pivot ball itself is still very tight and feels ok...

you can see the tranny linkage going up and down with the shaft...


anyone else notice this? let me know how your hursts are feeling guys...

have you pulled the boot and tightened the screws that the handle screws to the shifter? i have to tighten mine every 8-12 months

 

yea, thats the first thing i checked.....

the top one was a little loose, and that was giving it a little forward and backward play... but once that was fixed i really could feel the up and down play in the shaft of the shifter

this issue is not related to the shift ball or chrome stick whatsoever

 

I got 18.000 miles on mine and is tight just like new ( no up and down movement )

 

I have noticed this recently on mine also. I don't know if it was always that way I really can't remember, I thought I was crazy. Its probably about 1/8" as you say and everything else is tight and right, I don't know what it is?

 

yea i dont remember if mine did it new, but i dont think it did, as i can feel the up down movement during the 1-2 shift and what not....

its just annoying. I am leaving town tomorrow and when i get back maybe i will email hurst and ask them what is in the normal tolerance of this shifter...

cause this just doesnt seem right.

 

I'm not sure I notice it on the first to second shift, I'm gonna check that out tonight, but now that I know its there I'll just sit at the light and just pull up on the **** thing almost like a twitch, it's becoming very annoying.

 

I haven't had mine in that long yet, so not sure I would be able to tell I WILL continue to check though now that you've mentioned it and will certainly let you know if it happens. BTW: I am NOT experiencing it now so I would imagine you're wasn't either...

 

yea once you notice the slop you will pull up and down on it all the time....

You do it out of habit, now Ill end up doing it because you all keep mentioning it!

 

Have had mine in for 6 months. Haven't noticed any up-down play. But I have noticed that it's breaking in.

 

No play here, blue Loctite everything.
16k mile its all tight. . . .

 

well its not a loose bolt problem...

every bolt i have access too has been checked and rechecked, and its definately an internal assembly issue

i want to figure out how many guys have this issue before approaching hurst with it...

 

Mine's been on 15 months and about 10K miles, and no vertical slop. I've never had to tighten the handle screws either - I put the blue loctite on them and it's been good.

One thing I notice with this shifter, however, that I didn't notice with the stock shifter is that I can kind of feel it flexing when going over speed bumps say, or sometimes even when braking - it's weird and hard to explain. I wouldn't call it a problem though - it's probably just noticeable because the stock shifter was rubbery in comparison.

 

yea the hurst does have some moderate feedback to it, but i like it... makes you feel more of a part of the car... not just the driver

Had the exact same problem on my first Hurst....within a week of installation. It ended up being a defective shifter so I exchanged it for a new one and no problems since. You should not have this issue at all. I believe there's a year manufacturers warranty if I'm not mistaken. I'd get on the horn with Hurst and see what they have to say.
