I murdered a turbo Genesis

The local track decided they wanted to try a Wednesday night out since its cruise night in the city. They were only charging $5 to run and $1 to spectate so it was PACKED! No times, no tree(flag man) and no prep! I didn't feel like bothering with the ET Streets so I went out on street tires. Since it was mostly Honda kids and whatnot I ended up lining up against an Integra, which I destroyed...but that wasn't even close to a fair race. Next I was able to get lined up to a turbo Genesis with a kid behind the wheel. I talking to him about it, found out it was stock and if he had plans, then wished him a good race. In his defense, he's still learning his car and he hasn't learned(even though he had multiple runs before me) to not just mash the throttle and sit there and spin. Either way, from the runs of another Genesis, I really just don't understand where the "Mustang killer" idea came from. They're nice, peppy little cars with potential(at least the turbo), but out of the box they're nothing we have to worry about. I'm sure we all knew this by now though.

...I forgot to mention I hate racing on street tires. But even then, its always nice to see people seeing the other sex out there kicking some butt. Their reactions are hilarious.

Antigini, I have a good friend that has the Gen Track eddition. Its pretty quick. That version is a V6 that puts out about 306hp I think. If I recall correctly the turbo I4 version is in the neighbor hood of 212hp??? To kill that yes, there shouldn't be any problem. Now I've seen videos of the G37, 09' GT, and v6 gen racing. You see the mustang and the g37 easily spank the gen(even though the gen jumped first from the start). By the end of second gear the other cars are about a car length ahead of it.

I test drove one and it was pretty anemic to say the least. For a V6 it was quite impressive, but I think its silly to compare it to a V8 Mustang which is what a lot of magazines and press were doing. They have two completely different power bands and engine personalities.

Dang sounds like I missed out on a fun night out there! I didn't even know they were open during the winter season. Are they going to have any more events in the coming weekends?

Ha ha! At least the guy in the Genesis didn't give any ricer excuses. I heard the Genesis turbo-4's are somewhat related to the one in Mitsubishi's EVO X. It will be interesting to see their potential with the right parts and tuning combination.

I've read the same thing, that the Genesis T-4 is related to the Evo engine and when modded it may have more potential than the V-6 version. I checked out a Genesis in the showroom, it is a decent looking car but I was dissapointed with the headroom (sunroof equiped) and the shallow trunk.

Good OP, I wish we had winter racing!!

I'm more interested in the turbo Genesis than the V6. Like many others, i'm interested in seeing what it can do with some upgrades like piping, tuning and other supporting mods. From what i've seen from the V6 models, i'm not too impressed. Hyundai is improving, but I don't think they'll have a true "Mustang killer" from the factory for at least two more generations.

Well especially with the new power plant in the 11'. They better forge and boost the v6 if they want to come close.

IMHO, Hyundai dropped the ball on a REAL Mustang Killer when they went to a V6 instead of the 375 hp Tau V8 engine. They claimed the V8 wouldn't fit in the Genesis Coupe. That's blasphemy because ANY engine will fit, it's a matter of making other stuff fit the engine.

While that would have been preferred, I don't think Hyundai would have been able to contain costs if they went that route. Do they even have a F/R layout manual transmission that can handle the Tau V8's output?

That was their excuse. The real reason is 2 things. Price and CAFE. V8 would have put the car at a price point they didn't want. The V8 would have also put their total MPG average off. They were gunning for the MPG crown at the time.

MPG/CAFE is a BS excuse. Here's my solution for MPGs on a V8:

Gearing

Ford could have easily gotten 30+ MPG out of the Mustang GT, Crown Vic, and any other V8 powered car. Use 2.73s or similar rear gears to get that cruising RPM well below 2000 RPM. Then offer an optional/dealer-installed rear axle ratio which would be aftermarket.

Ford did this on my 2000 Crown Vic. I got the factory optioned 3.55s, and my cruising RPM at 80 MPH is about 3000 RPM. I can only get a max of 20-21 MPG pure highway, but my window sticker says 18/25 just like the Crown Vics that got 2.73s - yet the Police Interceptors (with the factory 3.55s) were rated only 16/21 - but were exempt from CAFE at the time. Genius.

As for price point, I'd agree for that specific point in time. With the new Mustang GT starting at $31k MSRP (for a stripper), I'd garner that a well-equipped 2011 GT would be $40k.

fyi, you know the turbo genesis only comes with a hair over 200hp stock? it's the non-turbo v6 that has 300hp.

Yes, I do. The whole point of the thread was basically to say "This Mustang Killer won't kill a Mustang", even if you go with the V6.
