Lightbulb I Got Sick of Foglight HAZE !!!

I removed my foglights.
I put in a set of Hella 500 DRIVING Lights. (I had to modify them a little)
I re-wired my headlight connectors, switching the high and low beams.
I decided that I had little need for foglights. I don't drive in foul weather.
I do want driving lights for night on the back roads.
The only thing is that I now have a low-beam indicator on my dash.
(I run blue dash lights, so it doesn't really show up much.)

I hope I like this set-up.

Yeah, he swapped the high/low beam switch so that on "low beam", which is now the high beams, he can use his driving lights, which used to be the fog lights. Then when he turns on the "high beams", which are now the low beams, he gets the high beam ind. light on the dash. Confused yet?
So anyway, +1 on the pics, and hows it work?

It was the down and dirty way around the Smart Junction Box. I don't think that the low beams have a separate relay and I just wanted to see if I could run the fogs and highs together. I may find out later a way to wire directly off the SJB so the high beams get back the proper relay.
.
I don't have any good pictures yet, here's a bad one:

The Driving lights are definitely brighter than the Highbeams. They are 55W bulbs vs. the foglight 45W, so they still run off the 15amp fuse.
I left them on for about 15 minutes with no problems so far.

Housing is ABS plastic. The reflector is aluminum and the lens is tempered glass.
I had to cut some of the bottom to fit and attached it upsidedown to the original support ring that holds the fogs. They are not as deep as the original fogs so I had to shim little at the bottom of the support ring with some heavy rubber I had.

I took some pictures outdoors during the day.
They are definitely brighter than the highs.
I am not sure if they are brighter than the silverstar ultra, but the reflectors aren't hazing.

hella 500

I just installed hella 500's on my 88 4runner and when I was in the garage, I kept putting them in front of my 06 mustang.
Quick questions for you. any pics from during the job? also, are you able to adjust the angles of the new driving lights?
Thanks a bunch,
Ron

I can adjust it by moving the screws on the holding ring and by moving my big rubber shim I have in the back.
I seem to have them adjusted pretty well to match up with the high beams, but I haven't given them a good road test yet. Stupid snow!!
The PIAA kit is probably easier to work with, but I haven't seen one yet.
I had Hella lights on my '86 4Runner and I am just a little partial to them, so I thought I'd give it a try.

They have been known to replace them as many as 3 times and counting.
Why bother if all you get is the same thing.

This looks like a good fix to the low quality Ford units. I used to sell Hella product and I was very impressed with the quality.

Winter is over finally.
I finally got to road test my lights tonight.
They are great !!!
The adjustment came out right about where I wanted.
Having the highs and driving lights on together I can see forever !!!
I can run driving lights and parking lights during the day (too bright for legal headlights).
It is a little weird having the dash indicator on driving around town.
I think it is a good trade-off to be able to run true driving lights and high beams. I haven't found an easy way around the SJB that will get the indicator off.

I did a similar set up when I installed my center headlamp grille.

The factory fog lights look cool, but are pretty much useless.

I purchased a set of after market Voltswagon Golf headlamps. They came with an H4 (high/low) bulb, a lower mounted 55Watt fog lamp bulb, and a daytime running lamp bulb. All in one headlamp.

Then I modified the grille mounting bracket for the factory fog lamps to hold springs. The new headlamps are held in place by these springs. I eventually had the headlamps aligned, and siliconed them into place.

I'm using a relay triggered off of the high beam, and another relay triggered off the low beam to control them. I had to do the same for the fog bulbs, but used the exsisting fog lamp wire. Still have not wired up the daytime running lamps..... soon.

Driving at night is really great. I have no problems seeing at high speeds.
Oncoming drivers seem to dislike the high beams too.
