Hurst Billet shifter Question
I just installed a new Hurst billet shifter in my GT and everything seems good to go except for the fact that when I pull the shifter back from 5th and let it go into nuetral I hear a loud snap (click) from inside the tranny.I never noticed that sound before with the stock shifter and wondered if this is normal. All the other gear changes are quiet.

Any solutions to this admittedly small issue? I just had my Billet Plus put in this week and get more or less the same noise. No biggie, really, as long as it doesn't hurt anything. Just wondering if anyone has solved the problem.

I'm starting to think it's in the driveline itself. I hear and feel it when I am slowing down. Probably amplifies the slop in the mounts and driveline with the hard bushings in the Hurst shifter. No big deal, I don't suppose.

I think the only way around this is to do like the MGW kit and just add dynamat to the top and bottom of the drive tunnel, it might help in keeping the trans quiet from the inside of the car.

The after market shifter does not change how any thing actually happens inside the transmission. The shifter simply attaches to that single external rod and does not modify is push pull or rotation action to select the gate and gear, other than tightening up the clearances some and changing the leverage you have (which is less due to the shorter throw). Because the shifter mounting is more rigid, you will have more noise and vibration transfer.

I plan to use tip I read in another post on my Pro5.0 (works the same for the Steeda Tri-Ax) in which you add some dampening material (like bulk plumbing gasket material you can buy for a couple bucks at a hardware store) between the front rail/shifter assembly and between the shifter handle and handle mount. This is supposed to help reduce some of the vibration/noise that is transfered between those 2 areas. It seems to make sense, so I found the material at a local True-Value and then cut out 2 pieces of material with an exacto knive along with cutting out for the mounting holes. Think I paid $4 for 2 different thicknesses of 4in x 4in material (I used the 1/8 inch piece). I also plan to add some dynamat while I have things torn down, just as an added level of noise control.
I won't know until spring if it helps and my car is parked for the winter, but will post an update when I get a chance to drive it.

I never had a "snap" noise with my Hurst. I have had mine in since April of 06. It may be the centering springs making a noise upon return to neutral. There are some heavier springs in this shifter which center the stick between gears. The snap may be a spring in the shifter. It may get better over time as the spring sets. If you don't have it from first, just sit in the car (ignition off) with the clutch pressed in and push the stick from center to right about a hundred times to see if the spring snaps upon return. This will eliminate your fear of actual tranny issues.

typically you will hear more trans (noises) when installing an aftermarket shifter due to less vibration dampening etc. This is pretty normal with the Hurst as mine does it too and no issues whatsoever.

My noise is more of a thunk sound when I hit the brakes and get close to stopping. Maybe not a loud thunk, but it feels like a small slack sound. Not a rattle at all. Take it out of gear, and it doesn't do it at all.

I have never experienced any clicking/thunk noises coming out of any gears or at all but i do notice a little bit of play when in gear or in neutral, i am able to move the shifter a tiny bit when in gear(decent amount of play)
Should i get a new one or is there a better product out there with the same amount of short throw or a shorter throw then the hurst?
