how to raise engine for header install?

Hopefully will be doing my header install in the next couple weeks. How have you guys been lifting the engine to get them in? I've read some have jacked up by the oil pan with a 2x4 or phone book for support, some have bashed the idea. What options are out there? I will probably be doing it in my garage/driveway.

Lifting on the oil pan with a 2x4 is what I did. Than to need to rock the engine from side to side to get enough extra clearance.

A few of us helped Leo install a set of JBA shorties. Took all day and was a major PITA. We did just about everything possible, including a ratcheting tie-down strap to help pull the motor to one side.

After the install, everyone that helped vowed never to do this mod.

I got the JBA's only because my motor was out and the install labor was essentially free.

I used a phone book on top of a jack stand to do it. I installed Kooks LTs and had no problem with jacking the engine up. I didn't try to move the engine side to side to make installation/removal on each side easier, but since I took the motor mounts/brackets and steering shaft out, I had enough room to move them around. In the end, there was no damage to the oil pan and the headers work great. I will admit that it was the biggest PITA I've been through in terms of manual labor (I love the headers now though!).

Be careful, use a lift and a transmission jack to lift the engine by the oil pain with a 4x4

Most likely won't be using a lift, so it will be jackstands and a phonebook or wood block on the oil pan. Thanks for the info guys, that was the one part that concerned me the most. Now to clean out the garage and make room.

I used a jack with a 2x6 or 2x8 (don't remember which) on it's side up against the front oil pan bolts to support the engine. I did not have to lift it at all to do my Kooks install, just support it when I had the engine mounts off the engine.
