How do shorty headers effect the exhaust sound?

How do shorty headers effect the exhaust sound? I am contemplating getting shorties mainly for looks and the improved rwtq numbers but was wondering what they do to the sound, if anything.

Cheers,
Jon

Calling TOM281... Come in please. All kidding aside Tom281 did shorties about a month ago and he claimed he couldn't tell any sound difference from the stock manifolds.

Pardon the pun, but sounds like LT's are the way to go. Just don't want them to be too loud. Cops around where I live seemingly have got nothing better to do than bother people with somewhat noisy cars.

Yep, this is true. No noticeable difference, atleast when using the FRPP ceramics and I doubt that any other shorty will be different.

Tom... didn't the shorties at least give you that header sound you get from them being made of thin wall tubing instead of heavy cast iron.??

Maybe the ceramic coating dampens that sound somewhat.. but I would think you could still hear that distinctive sound from the cylinders firing into the tubes.

I don't know... I guess honestly I don't hear it but then again, with the Vortech and offroad H & Borlas, maybe it's just being drowned out??

tom281, I believe has some hearing loss do to his age now!... After I installed my Steeda SS shortie's it seemed to lower the exhaust note a little! also sounds a Little cleaner.

Thats pretty much what I got out of them. The ceramic coating does look good under the hood though.

I think your hearing aid is back feeding some. Turn it down a tad.
I know it is not the exact same engine but I put Ford Racing shorties on my 96 Cobra and I was dissappointed that they didn't make any change in the tone of the car. FWIW! But definitely looked better!!

You could go with the LT's and put your stock mufflers back on. It'll be louder than stock, but not obnoxious, especially when your foot's not in it. Sounds awesome with catted h-pipe (went with JBA's myself).

Longtubes are the way to go if you want any power gains. Shorties won't really do anything. The consensus for hp numbers are anywhere from 15 to 25 hp (depends on the tune too). Not sure about the torque, but I can tell you, with my L/T's and tune, my car MOVES NOW!!!! Now that I have had my AR L/T's I would NEVER go back to stock again!!! The sound is INCREDIBLE!!!!
