How do I break in a new car / engine?

I just picked-up my 07 GTCS w/5-speed stick. The owner's manual only says to fluxuate speed. It doesn't say to stay under certain RPMs, change oil at 500 miles, don't punch-it, etc. Do I not need to worry so much about the engine, as I did in the old days?

What is the best way to break the car in?

Drive it like you intend to drive it; in my situation, yes drive it like you stole it!

I think people over complicate it

-Vary the RPM's (go from 5th to 4th to 3rd and back up on the freeway)
-let the engine warm up before any hard runs

I drove mine like a sane human being, mainly because I just drove to work, for probably the first thousand miles and once I hit that, I changed the oil and started driving it like like a normal human being with the occasional stolen car syndrome.

In my defense 80% of my driving weekly is sitting 2 feet behind the car in front of me.

They say to keep it under 5000 RPM for the first 1000 miles or so, but screw it!! That is what a warranty is for!!

I like to give my 2007 Mustang GT a good rev now and again but I'm afraid I'm going to turn those clunky three valve heads into a rattle box of broken parts.....Anyone else feel like the heads don't like the beating?

This is what I did. I still don't get crazy, but have been known to "blow the cobwebs out" every now and again.

Same way you break in an old car... take a rock smash the window and unlock the door.

No i all seriousness cars broken in hard run hard. Make sure you very the engine rpm on the first couple hundred miles..that means no highway cruising!..

If you go to gentle, pistons rings will not seat seat properly..

Take that thing out and wring the crap out of it. If it's gonna break, break it under warranty. My car had 120 miles on it the morning after I picked it up. I took the thing out and took it to redline more that day than I did my 96GT in 4 years. Drive the car hard man, it'll hold together.

I broke it in like I drive it which is harder than most. I did the same with my 91 escort .... sold it at 200,000 miles when it needed its first major component (original clutch started slipping ). I power shifted that one also. Engine still started and ran fine... did not burn oil. All factory maintenance done on schedule owned since new.
