I can't tell a lot of difference in sound from the shorties to the long tubes. Some here say there is a lot, but I don't hear it. The long tubes perform better though, but it will require changing your system and some welding. If I were doing it, I would also change out the H pipe for an X-pipe at that time.

Don't stop now!! Long tube's are good ror 20-25 RWHP... If your worried about smog law's, just go with some hi-flow cat's, good to go.
Long tubes and an off road x-pipe might give you that figure, but how much does removing the cats account for that?

Thanks everyone for the feedback - picked up a lot of good points. Given that the shorty's only give minimal hp increase - I'll probably go ahead and install the Magnaflow (newer version) of their x-pipe with high flow cats. When these 1st came out (IIRC) the claim was 15 - 19 rwhp increase with no other mods.....

In regards to noise levels, when I fist installed the x-pipes - the under car sound was much louder - not sure how much of this increase was due to the exhaust rubbing the bottom of the car though....seemed a bit louder out the back - but it didn't seem to run any better and probably needs a dyno and tune adjustment to compensate for the high flow cats. I only had it on a couple of days though and need more experience with it.

I'll post results!

Your exhaust will prolly get louder with some driving. HP "claims" are usually a You may not get any noticeable performance benefits without a tune.

Bradley, I would be interested in info about a new Magnaflow x-pipe & hi flows.

Tks,

Paul

Paul the new pipes should be here this weekend or early next week. I'll post after I get them installed - and then am going to schedule a trip your recemmended tuner in Torrance. Last time the engine seemed like it just wasn't running as strong as before - I installed the x-pipes - that's why I was thinking it was running too lean or something. Also, it did kick off the CEL light twice in 2 days which has not come back on the past 5 weeks once I reinstalled the stock pipes.....

Great! Are the new pipes the ones listed at Partshopper? If you have any problem dealing with the tuner let me know. Maybe if I know when you're going, I can stop by there.
Good luck!

I know, california law stinks.... but don't we have 4 years until our first smog test? I am seriously considering going with a cat-less off road setup, and then 4 years down the line, putting the stock cats and headers back in. Its worth it for 4 years of fun. we are talking from now until 2009.

Paul - I got mine through Ninosport (he was best price and is great to deal with). Magnaflow told me that they did indeed have the new pipes ready to ship and were actually already shipping so you should be able to find them soon.

I'll give you a heads up when I schedule my dyno visit - be great to check out your stang as well.

Jordan - you are correct - just be carful for the "CARB Police" at auto shows, etc....I have heard of them checking under cars with mirrors - looking for missing CATS

Of course, you can always take your chances. Many years ago I got caught up in a CHP road block. (I lucked out though, the officer opened my hood and immediately slammed it back closed. Gave me my license back and told me to get out of there). I was driving a very heavily modified car. In 2000, I had to bring in a '99 Explorer for a "random" state smog inspection. The notice said they were checking newer cars to see how the emissions systems were performing. I don't know how the state checks compliance now. Guess I'll prolly find out soon enough.

They make great speakers too!

BBK & Hooker are coming out with long tubes, but I don't have any prices on them. I believe Mac Performance has prolly the least expensive so far.

Yes, it was JBA some people reported having problems with.

If you run JBA long Tube's they require you to install Steeda motor mount's for clearance issue's. Also the fact that the Steeda mount's flex much less than the stock Hydra-mount's, also helping with clearance.
