in the latest issue of popular hotrodding they have a write up on the 05 and the predator tuner.
They have various stages of dyno results.
Dont have the magazine with me today but this is from memory, so numbers may be off.

First they put a 87 octane tune in- got about 15hp

Then just removing the hydrocarbon trap they got about another 12hp.

after that they put on some steeda stuff and I dont remember what or the numbers, but I know ive been reading here about the hc trap only being worth about 3hp maybe, I just wanted to throw this out there in case you haven't seen the magazine write up.
I haven't done any performance mods to mine yet, so I can't say anything myself, but I am looking to get a tuner, either x2 or diablosport, haven't decided yet.

Because a magazine says it's so, doesn't mean diddly. I call on that one.

I'll buy 15 horses from a tune, but my real world experience tells me the difference from the H-Trap is no big deal and depending on your setup can actually make things worse. When I combined my drop in K&N and H-Trap removal with the stock-tune my car ran like poop. I ran it this way for 2 weeks and it never got better. I put it back in until I got my Predator, then I took it out with no problems.

Not everyone has had that experience, but I'm not the only one either

I wonder if they repositioned the sun visors and picked up anything additional.

I agree, as well as not to believe everything that is posted on the internet and message boards

They do post the dyno charts and results, I would say thats no different than people on here posting the same. Again I havent done this to mine so really don't know who to believe, LOL just playing devils advocate.

I have the K&N kit with the HC trap still in. In a few weeks I plan on getting it dynoed with and without the trap in to see the difference. I will post my results on here when I find out.

Removing the trap only adds 2-4hp. However, removing the trap and having a custom tune can add 20-25hp. I personally watched a stock 05 tuned on the dyno pick up 27hp with nothing more that a custom tune and trap removed and a K&N replacement Filter.

I gained 4 HP removing the trap. 12 is a ridiculous number.

Where are you guys gettin all this dyno work done? I live near the Spokane, Washington area, and dont know of a single dyno shop around here. Many of you act like you can easily walk to the nearest dyno.

The HC trap must not be all that important as Ford neglected to install one in my stang, It ran good w/o but it is much better with my newly installed K&N CAI.

I think the HC trap is nothing but BS. When I removed mine I felt no gain of hp nor does the exhaust sound louder like some have claimed. Its all in the imagination.

Be it a 5hp or 15hp gain I doubt you're gonna feel much difference by Seat of the Pants evaluation. :bang: Can you honestly sit in a car and tell 280hp from 295? However, that difference would most definitely show up on your 1/4mile results.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Dyno results can vary. And removing the HC trap is a move in the interest of improving intake characteristics... the trap is there to reduce emissions. A tune is ultimately required to correctly adjust the air/fuel ratio and this has to be done on a case by case basis. Climate conditions/fuel differences and slight variances in the engines themselves will make the results of the removal vary.

Also HC traps make outstanding paper weights.

Hi -

Sure would appreciate it if you could pm me when you get the dyno results. Know you will post but since I installed the K&N with the HC in, really would like to know. Where I live, Richmond is the closet I have found for a dyno and that is 150 miles away. Just my gut, but it sure feels the car is more responsive, especially out of 3rd and 4th besides louder. Also curious if the K&N 15 hp is on the mark.

Thanks

I must have been on some drugs, had a chance to look at the magazine again and it was a 5hp gain, not 12. Still a little better than expected though

Yes. I believe you can. I rode in Hatchman's car after he installed a custom tune (93) and could tell a SIGNIFIGANT difference. If you estimate that his tune and CAI gave him 30 rwhp, then "feeling" 10 is certainly possible.

5rwhp is questionable. But if you can't tell a 10rwhp difference, you need to become more familiar with your car. IMHO

Definitley, you should be able to tell at least a 10rwhp gain 5 maybe not but 10+ I think you might feel the diff.

I think going from a stock tune to a custom tune adds more to the seat of the pants than just HP. I would think the change in throttle characteristics alone is going to give you a big diffrence in seat of the pants feel.
