H pipe VS. X pipe
I put in a ford racing x-pipe. When I called and talked to Ford racing about them he told me they would improve my mid range. I am not sure if he was talking sound or engine but the sound was Awesome. I added GT500 mufflers also. I can tell you that people always tell me how much they love the sound of the car.
Hope this helps

This may be more confusing than helpful, but it's info. Some like the sound of an H pipe better, I did exhaust work for hp, not noise...good luck with your decision..
.....Chart is from a 1990 GT

From what I read, an X pipe scavanges better than an H pipe, which may or may not help hp @ a given rpm range.
My 2011 GT500 had an H pipe from the factory. When I did headers, an X pipe was installed. If my tuner thought an H pipe was the way to go, that's what would have been installed.....it wasn't.

my standard answer to the mid pipe:
the x pipe provides more power than the H. The x pipe balances out the torque curve while the H pipe is more for sound dynamics. When the exhaust gases pass the opening in the X this creates a low pressure area thus improving scavenging it does however have a lower tone than the h-pipe. The 90* turn the exhaust gases make for the cross over in the H pipe are more designed for sound vs performance.

I replaced my stock H pipe with the ford x pipe and liked the sound improvement. Now I have headers and high flow cats with an x pipe. As far as hp either way I don't think you would ever notice one or two HP or TQ either way.
Are these H and X pipes a job that needs to be a done at a shop? I know you'd have to get underneath the car but not sure if regular jacks would be able to get the car up enough or not.
It's interesting and could very well just be me, but, the sound of nearly every x pipe I have heard on You Tube and vendor sites has been mild to flagrantly raspy, which in my opinion is not a lower tone, in fact I hear the opposite, the h pipe actually sounds more like a muscle car to me than a raspy sound.
Am I wrong or just wierd ears?

Ahh the X vs H argument! Here's the skinny, yes, X flows better than H, and yes, better flow equals more power. How much more power? On a stock or bolt ons car, not a lot. Definitely single digit differences. On a ~3500lb car that already has upwards of 300hp you're not going to feel a difference in power between the two, even if the dyno proves there is one. Now on a really heavily modified car where you absolutely need every bit of flow possible then yes, X is definitely the way to go, but 99% of us wont ever get to that level of performance.
So how do you choose? Sound. Pure and simple. Listen to a bunch of cars on youtube or whatever and figure out what you like. There is a big difference in sound between the two. I think the easiest way to describe it is that the X pipe makes a raspier, almost more 'exotic' definitely more 'modern' sound whereas the H makes a deeper, more 'old school muscle' tone. Of course your axle backs will have an affect on this as well. It's all down to personal preference, some like the raspiness of the X, some don't.
For example, here's two videos of my car with a pypes off road X pipe and magnaflow axle backs. The first video is a WOT run through a few gears, the second is inside the car just driving around showing the 'daily drive' sort of volume and tone.

I think the performance gains of an x-pipe really depend on what your looking for. I've always heard the H is better for low to mid range power and the X is better for top end power and the chart seems to back that up. Seems the H is better or equal to the X all the way up to 5200 rpm and at 5400 it's only a 3 hp/to difference. So in the end it's really more about sound and IMO the deeper H is better but it's all just personal preference.
