Gears..3.31 to???
Gears..3.31 to???
Debating on swapping out the gears. Since stock is 3.31, im thinking either 3.73 or 4.10. I won't be dragging much at all (not enuff time)...except for stop light to stop light. note that these are combined with my 3500 stall TC.
Opinions???

Colby, our automatics work very well with 4.10's. I've often thought I should have gone with 4.30's or 4.56's in retrospect, but the 4.10's are the bare minimum I'd consider for our heavy automatics. My GT is a daily driver, and 4.10's are great on the street (and the occasional trip down the dragstrip). IMO, 3.73's just aren't enough gear for our setups.
Get a gear calculator spread sheet. You RPMs will increase by about 22% and your MPG will be reduced on the highway by 10 to 12%. I went with 3.73s and have posted numerous times on the observed effects.
I just had 3.73's installed in my auto GT and I really like it. I want to get a PI torque converter some
day and I was worried about traction on the street with 4.10's even before a higher stall converter.

Here Colby. Use this to calculate engine rpm.

Depends a bit if you drive more highway or city. The 3.73 is more highway friendly, but the 4.1 exerts less stress on the drivetrain in normal city driving. I have 4.30s in a box still, and while I'm hesitant about the 20% increase in highway rpm, I don't think the amount of highway driving I do is enough for me not to do the swap (I'm at 3.55 now)
I didn't buy my GT with gas mileage inmind so I definitely say go with the 4.10's and a nice race tune! Normally I only get about 14 to 16 mpg since I'm usually running around in 3rd gear. Now I did just do a trip from NJ to Florida and back. I averaged 22 mpg (anywhere from 65 to 100ish mph) running Bamachips 93 Street Tune which I'm happy with. My Mustang isn't my DD so gas isn't a concern. I use the Scion xa for my commuter @ 33 mpg w/a 90 mile roundtrip. So if you have a DD def go w/the 4.10's.
I just picked up my car from install of a 4.10 ring/pinion yesterday. Honestly, it's not enough. In retrospect I should have probably gone with a 4.30.
It completely transforms the car. Even with these 4.10's in the rear I would have no issues putting a blower on this as it sits.
Unless your car spends a majority of it's time on a highway, go with at least a 4.10, if not lower.

See that's the dilemma I have, 4.10s or 4.30s? I'm afraid I'll want more. Have 3.55's already. I take it your GT is a manual?

Top of 1st gear is about 35ish which is decent. I've had cars that from the factory are geared lower. So far I haven't noticed myself disliking the shortened 1st gear.

The original posters car is an auto trans car. You need to remember that 1st and 2nd gears in our auto cars are a lower than the manuals. I have heard some say that putting 4.10's in these auto's that 1st gear particularly in very short. Almost useless. Personally I believe 3.90's would be ideal. But Ford racing doesn't offer them.
I have also been considering gears and can't decide between 3.73's or 4.10's. I live in the country and 80% of my driving is 55 mph or above. I sure would like to drive someone's auto with 4.10's before I make a final decision for me.
