No they should not whine. I have installed two 4.10 ratio gear sets in Ford 8.8" differentials this year. First one was very easy, setup perfectly within spec and no whine. The second set I did were noisy on accel. and decel. This was due to incorrect pinion depth. I took at apart and corrected the pinion depth (had to move the carrier to one side) and now they are quiet.
The shop you are dealing with has done something wrong. Take it back and have them do it again. If your gears whine they are not setup right PERIOD.
If they argue and try to present the argument that all 4.10 gears whine you can tell them that many trucks come with 4.10 gears from the factory, for example all 4 x 4 Rangers come with 4.10's and an 8.8. Do you think they general public would accept gear whine in a new vehicle. I know I wouldn't.
Good luck!

I have seen a lot of issues with FRPP's new coated gears having more whine issues than the older ones have. The new ones carry an M at the end of the part number and have a chrome looking plating on them. I had an 08 in here the other day that we installed a set in. Backlash was good, pattern looked perfect, etc. Took it for a ride and the car had a decel whine at around 50 mph that went away around 30 mph. I tried making changes to the backlash and it did not change at all. I finally got fed up and grabbed another set off the shelf. Set them up as usual and they were quiet. Seems like Ford might be sub contracting out to the lowest bidder for gears now. I believe you can still order the 410A gears which are the original visteon Ford ones.

"Getting harder to find quiet gears" is a salesman's pitch........
Leo is right, the install is everything. I've had three different cars now in the past 5 years that I've had different gears installed, all of which were quiet. The constants between all three cars??
1) Ford Racing gears
2) Same install shop
And to be honest, I know many people that don't use Ford Gears but have had ZERO problems when the install is done correctly, which may rule out #1 above LOL. Just be polite with the install shop, but don't settle until they're quiet. And don't drive the car between now and when it's fixed, you could do MUCH more damage driving now until it's done right.

tom281 is right. Don't drive the car until it goes back to the shop. You don't want to wear the new gears in to the wrong pattern or it will be impossible to correct the problem.
Sounds like the shop owner is being good about it though.
Good luck!
(you'll love the 4.10s once you get them setup right!)

I believe the M means they are made by Motive which hasn't gotten good grades in the past on this forum.

hi everyone!
thanks again for all the advice!
my immediate concern is the fact that this car is my daily driver. and i am supposed to go out of town this weekend , i will probably put 300 miles on the car over the week end. is this going to be a problem? thanks again

300 miles is not going to put any detectable wear on your gears but running them with an incorrect contact pattern is never a good idea. If you really have to make this trip I would suggest borowing or renting another vehicle and leave your Mustang parked until you can get your gears aligned correctly.
