Frrp Cai

Has anyone considered using the FRRP CAI with a performance tune from Bamachips? Not even sure if it is something that would work but my thoughts were you could stay smog legal with the FRRP CAI, since it has the CARB exemption. Also does the size of the CAI mean you would have to use 91 octane or is that just the tune Ford supplies?

Read my mod list and you'll see for yourself that I have both the Bamachips race/torque tunes and FRPP CAI in which btw is designed by Steeda as a direct result of their partnership in Ford's technology transfer program..As for smog legal is concerned ? the cold air intake itself has nothing to do with it as it's the FRPP programmer which has the CARB exemption however if your interested in any of Bamachips performance tunes ? their only available in either the SCT X-CAL II programmer or Diablosport Predator as his tunes cannot be downloaded into the FRPP pro cal tool as their programmer is neither adjustable nor has the capability of being re-programmed in fact you only get one basic 91-93 octane tune file that's set up just for the CAI and that's about it and should you decide to upgrade you're mods in the future ? once again the FRPP pro cal tool neither has the capability nor the option to permit upgrade/programming changes..Therefore you would be much better off and much happier with Bamachips performance tunes along with either the X-CAL II programmer or Diablosport Predator in which both give you full range of adjustability options, downloading/upgrading tuning files plus you also have the option to select from 87,89,91 and 93 octane performance tunes as well.. As a matter of fact, I've had both my Steeda/FRPP CAI and Bamachips tunes for almost a year now and can assure you that you will not be disappointed..

Yes, it's called the Steeda CAI. They are one in the same. The Steeda unit is a good CAI and when used with the high flow inlet elbow it will make about as much power as any other CAI. The problem with the FRRP is it only sold with the tuner. You will get more power and better driveability with the Steeda unit tuned with a good tuner than with the FRRP tuner and tune.
The 91 Octane only is due to the fact that the timing gets advanced enough that you will get detonation with lower octane.
I don't know if it is CARD approved.

WOW! Thanks for the info, so from what I understand it does not matter if I use the FRRP CAI, just don't use the tune, correct? So I could use the CAI with a tune from Bamachips, for example SCT w/ custom Bamachip tune. What would happen if I needed to re-flash back to stock for smog or visit to the dealership? I assume I would pass visual since I would have the FRRP CAI with the CARB exempt sticker but would the car run correctly with CAI and a stock tune?

What I am trying to avoid is having to change out the CAI everytime I need smog or visit the dealership. Plus law enforcement is getting worse with on spot under the hood checks. Do you understand what I mean?

After more thought let me re-phrase my original thought. What I would like to do is use the FRRP CAI without the tune supplied by Ford. I want to use an aftermarket tuner with a custom tune from Bamachips. I just want to use the FRRP CAI for the fact that it comes with a CARB exempt sticker. Is that possible

Although It's CARB approved ! that doesn't mean squat as the FRPP tuner is still nothing more than a basic 91 octane file which really doesn't provide much improvement over the factory tuning files and for those concerned about emission requirements ? you just simply re-install your factory airbox and re-flash back to stock and you're done

You could and sure it's possible, but why ? it's a complete waste of money when all you need to do to pass emissions testing is simply re-install you're factory airbox and then re-flash you're PCM back to stock and you're done in less than 10 minutes..

Brian, if you're concerned about an underhood spot check ? as long as you have the CARB exempt sticker, you can keep your SCT Bamachips tune installed without any worries however the car will not run correctly with a CAI and stock tune !! If whenever you reflash back to stock ? you must also re-install your factory airbox as well.. In fact here's what I'd do if in your position, first get both the CAI and FRPP tuner from Ford then purchase your custom tunes and SCT programmer from Bamachips and then you can always sell the FRPP programmer afterwards...

Why not just skip the FRPP one and get the C&L or JLT setup from Bama or Brenspeed? It takes 1/2 hour once every two years to return it to stock....

First off, the person in question is interested in the FRPP/STEEDA CAI for smog/CARB legal reasons due to the fact he resides in Calif and is concerned about underhood checkpoints and FYI the Steeda CAI is just as good as the C&L and JLT in producing similar HP and Torque results.. In fact I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever since running both the Steeda CAI and Bamachips tunes within the past year...Btw, Brenspeed also offers the Steeda CAI/SCT tuner package for $624.00
