Thumbs up FRPP X-PIPE with Borla S-Type - Impressions with Pics

Greatings boys and gals...
...yet another writeup from the peanut gallery....

So one day I was getting some quotes on parts, and I thought what about the FRPP X-PIPE. Change the sound a bit and very little oomph.

Sure... why not.
And considering I have Borla's S-Type... I figure I'd write a little somethin' somethin' on my impressions.

Here we go:

~Installation~
Seemed pretty straight forward.
Meassure twice, cut once... install clamps..bingo bongo...
Got this done at my dealership (Eastgate Ford/Hamilton) and they did a pretty good job.
Only I gotta go back tomorrow and get the tips re-alligned.
My right is the way it should be, my left...is a little shy and needs to be brought out some more. Not really noticeable..but I NOTICE (Edit....fixed)

~Sound - Startup Volume~
So after the install, they fire it up.
Sounds a bit louder, but could be 'cause we are inside the bay and the doors are closed.
Back at home I did fire it up, and yes...its a point louder... If stock was a 3 or 4, and borla was a 7...this is now a 7.5 - 9 depending if your idle or WOT.
WOT is louder

~Sound - Driving Volume~
On the way back home I drove it on the highway for 30 min, and through the city for 15 min.
Not as noticeable inside the car, as it is outside.
WOT is louder, but at regular driving speeds... i wouldn't say I noticed too much.

~Sound - Tone/Pitch~
Has the pitch changed?
I'd say not at all. If you like the borla sound... it stayed that low burble.
However, it seems to run smoother and faster. Someone put it nicely by saying it takes that 'motorboat' sound away. They are right...
Reving it on the inside you notice its got the same low noise, smoothed out... and sounds awsome.

~The Drone Zone~
If you hated drone before... you'll still hate it.
It does not improve it... and I actually thought it enhanced it a bit... though it may seem like the range is not as big. I'll have to drive it more to figure that one out. I did the 60mph in 5th test by applying 3/4 throttle and yeah.... drone.... boo hiss... Oh well. I could live with it before, I'll continue to enjoy it

~The Power~
Not gonna lie to you... you feel a difference.
I don't know if I lost low end, gained high... but I feel that its a smoother acceleration. You probably won't notice the 4-5hp or whatever this thing uncorks... but I did notice on the highway a quicker climb passing someone in 5th. Nice feeling.
Then again...could it all be a placebo

~Conclusion - Overall Impressions~

If you like the Borla/FRPP axle back and want this, but are afraid it will 'raise the tone'? Don't... it doesn't.
It smooths out the sound though, and adds some volume.
It uncorks some HP and probably even more on a Forced Induction motor.
And may add a tad more drone....
Whats great is that its an XPIPE that doesn't cost you an arm and a leg, as its just a equalizer pipe and not pipe+cats. Allowing you to keep your stock cats.

I give it

Thanks for reading, and sorry if I droned on a bit....
pun intended

Boomer,
Ditto - exact same results with my Pypes X-pipe - except it helped get rid of the drone from my Flowmaster A/T's. I'd post a link to my thread, but its currently AWOL with the restructuring...

Boomer,

Nice write-up. I am sure the Stinger guys will appreciate it, as a lot of guys have been asking me how they think the FRPP X-Pipe would do with the Borla's vs the GTA's that I have...now thanks to your post they will know

I will jump in here and say that for $135 the Ford Racing X Pipe is hard to pass up. I can't see any downside to this mod at all and mine feels a little stronger at WOT.

Nice write-up Boomer

I am thinking about getting this Xpipe and pairing it with a set of magnaflow hi-flow cats (In Garage). Would there be any fitament issues?

I'm in no ways saying yes or no.. but... the FRPP X is a direct replacement for the stock H...
The only difference spacewise is the clamps that attach it.
(the stock is clamped 2 times (rear of the H)
The replacement is clamped 4 times (front/rear)

I'll go back today and get some pics while its in the air

And, you're still legal with the cats... unlike me.

Here are some pictures of the X-Pipe. I hope it helps but Boomer's comments are probably correct.

I didn't notice that you had posted pictures.

Meaner and louder? Yes. But, I bet you would know who would get pulled over and harrassed by the Police first!

I don't have any drone at 60 in 5th with my Flowmaster A/T's. In fact, no drone at all to speak of. Does a convertible top absorb the noise and prevent an interior drone?

Think its the fact that the Flows are a chambered muffler and not as loud
Seems volume and design are the reason for Drone

I just got the X pipe on Friday, and after driving for a few days I have to echo all of these sntiments. All in all, for the price, it was an excellent choice in my eyes.

I like how it reduced the scavenging and overall, gives the car a bit better feel.

I did have the unit welded cat side, and used the existing clamps exhaust side.

Yeah, it probably helps to have a soft top 'vert. The coupe's cabin is a noise box (one tech told me this as reason to explain why I hear so many noises in my car - )

I had drone at around 25 mph and at 50. Very, very mild though, especially compared to the SLP LM's I had before. If accelerating fast enough you'd blow right through it. But the X got rid of that for me, now.

Maybe I'll consider it down the road... $135 is all, huh? Guess I'll have to add it to my future mod list. We don't have any emissions test here in FL, so I don't have worry about that!

In fact, after 30 seconds of thinking about it... this will be one of the next things I get now that I have a tuner that can get rid of the check engine light.

Thats a pretty good gain.

I'm wondering what one would gain with a forced induction engine

Hurry up mark...

Reduced the scavenging? Scavenging is a good thing. If anything an x pipe would increase scavenging. That's where the power comes from.
