Ford Racing 4.10 gears are in!

Install was done at Swanson Performance in Torrance, CA. Danny Swanson is no stranger to Mustangs. In fact, that's their speciality!

He was nice enough to let me hang around in the shop to watch the whole install. I stayed back around 10' so not to get in their way. I managed to get some decent pics and vids of the install.

Total time for the install was just under 4 hours. Backlash measured 0.007". Was told that the gear mesh pattern for accel/coast is perfect.

No whine, no groan, no leaks.

So the big question... how do they feel, right? Well, I was specifically told to take it easy for a 'little while'. Not sure how many miles 'a little while' is, but I'm going to try and force myself to keep from bouncing off the rev-limiter for a 100 miles.
Just from cruising in town, I can tell the rpm's are coming up a tad quicker through 1st gear and also higher when just driving in 3rd and 4th.

Here's some pics of today's event. Highlights below, but full album can be viewed here.

Bill,

It's not so much the miles, but the heat cycles. Drive them 15 miles, not exceeding 50 or so, then cool off for an hour. Do that several times and they're broken in.

Hey TacoBill, which FR gears did you go with. I know there seem to be some issues with the Motive-made FRPP 4.10's which are the ones I have still in the box in my garage that I am hesitant to have thrown in due to all the hype about them be difficult to "quiet down".

Those are the G410A which are the true ford racing gears I just baught them a couple of days ago. The sales rep from summit racing confirmed the letter "A" at the end means it's the ford gear and the letter "M" at the end is for motive made gears.

Yeah, I read somewhere about running through at least 3 'heat cycles'.
Thanks for the info.

My 'out the door' price was $953.

Now, before y'all have a cow, my FRPP alum. axle girdle was $230 plus tax.
Labor charge was an acceptable $400.
And, I supplied my own Mobil 1 75W-140 gear oil.
Rest of the cost was gears, install stuff, friction modifier.

True, I could have went with cheaper shop, and I know 'cheaper' doesn't neccesarily mean inferior work, but I must say that the guys at Swanson took their time, handled my car with big time TLC, and above all, performed a first rate install.

Oh, I'm sure it'll be a neck snapper once I get back into my regular driving habits.

Stop tempting me about the blower, Tom.. I may crack one day and get one!

+1 on what Modular81 said. I specifically wanted the 'A' gears. Will the 'M' gears surely whine and/or groan? I doubt it. On the contrary, will having 'A' gears assure a whine/groan free experience? I doubt that too.

I just minimized my odds of having issues by getting the 'A' gears and having a reputable shop do the install.

Hey Bill, that girdle fits with stock panhard bar? No re-location kit needed?

I clean it when I'm bored. Since I don't take it out in the rain, it really doesn't get that dirty.
I just use some Windex and a rag.

And, what do I do? At work? As little as possible!

Yes. FRPP makes 2 different girdles. They just came out with the M-4033-G2 specifically for the S197's. The one prior (without the G2 designation) did interfere with the panhard bar.

I love the diff cover, very nice. You'll have to post up some impressions once you have a chance to rip through the gears a few times.
