I've pretty much settled on getting Flowmasters for the GT. I know a lot of you recommended the American Thunder Axlebacks after my post on which exhaust sounds more old school muscle car. It is my understanding that American Thunder Axleback use a special 40- series muffler designed for the '05. My question is what would the difference be in sound quality if I get the regular 40 series mufflers? Will it be louder, rumble more like an older muscle car? Somewhere I've heard that some people have opted to install those instead of the axleback system. Plus I don't know if I like the black mufflers in the American Thunder Axlebacks as opposed to the usual stainless steel look. And the tips are a bit big @ 4". JBA's tips are 3" I believe. I've read that some people have said using the 40 series muffler candrain power and the American Thunder should be used. Anyone out there using just the 40 series set up? Any power loss? How about that sound? it's also my understanding that would be cheaper too. Thanks.

Excuse my ignorance, but to my knowledge there is only one cat back exhaust system available that Flowmaster makes. That includes muffler as well. At least for the 05-06. Correct me if I am wrong guys.....

There is only one 'kit'. Not sure how the 40 series would fit though. And not sure how they would sound.

I believe Flowmaster designed the 05+ muffler to eliminate/reduce drone, but still sound/flow like the 40 series. I would think the kit would be the best way, easier, and hopefully not much drone. I saw brenspeed comment that it doesn't have as much drone in the sound clips section of the website.

incorrect, they were forced to design the kit because the standard 40 series muffler lost 3 or 4 hp. This was highly publicized here on this board because a forum member's car was their test car. Flowmaster claimed a 3 hp gain and he took his car to another dyno to find the truth, that it lost HP. Besides the 05 kit makes it easy to hook up and do it yourself. It already has the connections in it already and it just clamps right on.

Ok, so basically the original 40 series mufflers can be put on, but at a powerloss. So with the new axlebacks - has the sound changed from what you'd hear on an '04 with the original 40s? I read that the axleback has 40 and 60 series technology, so I don't know that it would sound like an original 40. I read somewhere that someone said that their original 40 in their '04 GT sounded much louder. Anyone can second that?
