Fiberglass hoods w/hood struts

I've heard people saying they don't recommend hood struts with a fiberglass hood. I have never had a fiberglass hood so I wouldn't know. What are everyones experiences/thoughts with this? Thanks

Well.

i have the Shelby GT-H hood and the QuickLift Elite hood struts since 6 months now with no issues at all..

when i first got the struts, i tried compressing them by hand and i thought these will break a hole clear through the hood being so strong.

but after asking around, i figured it's only 8 holes and rivets, so i went on and installed them anyway, with the plan to keep a close eye on the contact points and look out for any surface tension on the hood while closing it.

With the weight of the hood added to the equation, the struts compressed and decompressed with the touch of a finger.. i can basically unlatch my hood and lift it up one foot.. and it would stay there
lift it up a bit more and it would glide up to open all the way up smoothly

closing it is a breeze too..

all in all, the combination works like a charm and i have no complaints or worries at all..

Error404: no, the stock hoods are Aluminum..

i have had a cobra r hood my my tbird now for a little over 3 years with gas type hood lifts. at the time the hood was painted the bodyshop was pretty impressed with the quality of the hood and it required little glass and prep work. well after a few months i started to notice swells in the hood, exactly where the hood struts were. keep in mind this hood was reinforced where the hood struts were as it was designed for them. my car didnt come with a prop rod. although it hasnt gotten worse, i can stil lsee the swells in the fiberglass where they attatch. i wouldnt recommend the hood struts for fiberglass hoods unless they are really really weak ones. for what its worth the stock hoodstruts swelled the fiberglass hood.

The Steeda struts connect to the hinge itself , so there should be no problem with them ...

I was advised AGAINST doing that by RK sport themselves Chuck when I put that CAL DREAM hood on my '05.....

You could get away with it and it might work

But with a few of the stories I have heard..... one bad time opening the hood and you break the fiberglass...... your hood is F-ed.....

Personally dont thing fiberglass makes a difference on the cars the aluminum is so light, carbon fiber might make a small difference but not worth the cash

Well I think its more an issue of the DESIGN, not any weight savings......

Most of the new designs are offered in fiberglass - you want a cool new hood, that's usually the way you have to go......

26.5 pounds is the weight of the stock hood, which is much lighter than the fiberglass hoods. The fiberglass hoods are definately for looks only, as I don't think you will ever get a hood as light as the stock aluminum hood.

Agreed there. However, I have only seen a few fiberglasses that I like, maybe just not my thing, fiberglass is so easy to mold thats why they are the way to go.

best bet if you want struts on a fiberglass hood stick to your CDC kit, it is safer and there will be no problems since most of the pressure is placed on the bracket and not the hood
