Exhaust question, anyone feel like trying to help me?

OK there are thousands of posts about GT exhaust but I actually need some help figuring out whatI want or should be looking into. I currently have Flowmaster Super40's on the factory H pipe and I want a more agressive tone with less pop from the mufflers. Now when I say agressive I don't mean track agressive with straight pipes like how SLP loudmouths sound, just something to give my GT a more smooth V8 rumble. I was thinking about going with a X pipe or possibly the FRPP X conversion but I don't know enough about exhaust to make the decision. I appreciate any help you could give me and if I can upload a clip of my current exhaust I will.

if you are going to keep the H...you will keep the popping...if you go to the FRPP xpipe..or another brand...the pop goes away like 90 percent..mainly just when cold. I have had JBA..similar to Flowmasters...and Magnaflow Magnapacks..more aggressive but drone bad at 1800rpm..I had FRPP GTA...they to me are the best sounding(not loud)..axlebacks out there and have the best tips. They will be more aggressive than stock ones...but are louder, and no drone. I am currently running Pypes violators with catted xpipe...and sound is very similar to GTA's..but tips aren't the nicest in my opinion. I was on a "lets try all these different mufflers" kick at the time..Anything like SLP loudmouths or Stingers and all that...they are alot louder and have way too much interior drone..you will get sick of it quick. Best bang for the buck: Pypes Violators...or FRPP GTA's..there are sound clips around..check here or Youtube. Hope it helped..Good Luck

Thanks for the input. I really don't think I want to change the mufflers and my tips are pretty awesome if I do say so my self I custom picked them( here are pics ) I just want to change their tone a bit. Whats the difference between a catted X-pipe, and an off road xpipe? Also which of those is the FRPP conversion kit? Also is there a difference between the catted X's like are some made different, for example are some what a TRUE catted X would be and others not? Sorry I am asking a plethora of questions just trying to educate my self.

The FRPP X pipe is used with your stock pipes & requires that you cut out a section of your pipes. Taco Bills stickies I believe has detailed procedures for this ( & many others ) . The off-road X-pipe has no converters so it sucks if you have to test for emmissions. Many companies have high-flow catted X-pipes & that is what I am going for .

I have the Flows on with Bassani long tubes and a off road x-pipe. I had the GTA's on first and it was way to raspy! The Flows toned it down a lot but obviously it is still loud, but that is what I was going for. I believe if you get an x-pipe it will have more of a "bark", a little higher pitch than the h-pipe. But if you stay with the stock headers and keep the cats, I don't think it would be too bad.

I love the tips you put on...in my response..i was assuming you had stock catted hpipe...if you keep the cats on and just add the xpipe...like the one from ford...you will lose the popping..it will smooth out the tone of your Flows...everyone is yelling "too Raspy" with x...yes...if you are running cattless..any way you go with cattless..H OR X...it is way louder. I had an offroad h before with stock mufflers, and JBA's...it was LOUD...and not to mention you will gas yourself out. Bad exhaust odor comes into car...gets all over your clothes and hair...not good. The offroad versions of both H and X..are woth a few more HP and Torque...but too many negatives IMO..like Inspection for one

i have a high flow catted x and i love it.... there is no raspiness at all....

it sounds like the tone your looking for could be found with a catted x and probably bassani or borla mufflers....

they both are mean and deep like flows but alot smoother... you can almost hear the money itll take to buy them though! lol

This is the exact setup I have on my car now.

I absolutely love it. I had an offroad X at one time that would terrify small children it was loud. I toned it down a little with some high flow cats. Cruise around youtube or streetfire and listen to some clips. Its a great resource.

Thanks Fman67 and everyone for helping me sort this one out. The more I hear and think about this I believe the sound I am looking for (can you look for a sound) lies with an x-pipe.

That sounds pretty awesome, mean hows interior noise?

I now need to know something else, whats the difference between welding on a X connection/modification like the FRPP and buying an full out replacement catted X? Also I know Bassani makes a X pipe like the FRPP one that converts the H to an X but what (besides price) do you think could be the differences?

Well you can tell by looking at them they have a different design than most x-pipes.

Can I say you will tell a big difference... I dunno. You'd just have to listen for yourself. Bassani exhaust tends to have a signature sound that I really like. I first heard it on my friend's 03 GT and really liked the sound. The high flow cats obviously flow better, and they are noticeably louder and much much lighter than the factory cats. The Bassani X that I have is also modular, you can easily swap the cats for the straight pipes that come with the kit and run around terrorizing the neighborhood.

Thanks for the info. I am going to give the FRPP X a try with my Flowmaster Super 40's and see how I like the sound change. The Bassani is almost double the price and If I don't like the FRPP it's easy to sell and is not going to break the bank @ 139.99. The goal is to take my time and find the right sound if I start changing everything at once I won't know what part did what (good or bad) and I do want to make my self a little more knowledgeable about this. Once I have it on I will post up what I think, as this may help others.

I'm late to the party but it sounds like you are on the right/most inexpensive track. I have Flowmaster American Thunders and a Pypes X that uses the factory cats. The Pypes was even cheaper than the FRPP X at the time, but I don't think Pypes make them anymore. Besides I wouldn't recommend it - it comes with hangars (which I thought was a plus at the time), but the hangers don't really line up.

A local TMS buddy gave me a good deal on a Bassani X a few months ago (which also has hangars and uses the factory cats), but I still haven't bothered to put it on. It's a real PITA messing with the midpipe and cats when you only have jack stands. If I get around to it, I'll report if there's any tonal difference. My real intent for putting the Bassani on instead of the Pypes is purely fitment issues only.

The Pypes X I have on now give me a slightly deeper, louder tone than the factory H. I like it, but I wouldn't want to go any louder.

Good Luck!

PS - there's a new TSB for those with the exhaust/center stack rattle to gut the rubber crossmember hanger mounts and get rid of them completely - they're only needed for "installation" and not functional anyway. So go figure...

If you are going to keep the flows, do not do an O/R X-pipe, unless you like an extremely tinny, raspy sound. I too have the factory H-pipe with flowmaster 40 series and I was thinking about changing the exhaust. But listining to my car from the outside, I relized it has the sound I am looking for.
