Driveshaft
 Hello...what do you guys think of a one piece ,possibly aluminum, driveshaft for our cars. Remember the old fox bodies..they had them for those. It think it would free up some weight, and HP,being less rotational mass, and doing away with that cv joint thing? Am i nuts? Could this work on these cars. There is a place near me that builds custom driveshafts, and balances them. Just wondering if it could be done for our cars.
Check out the pictures of my one piece driveshaft on my website. www.theabneys.com/mikestoys
I have one coming next week. JPC has them. Mike (s17pilot) has one as well but the difference is that he has a different tranny. I have one coming that'll mount up to the stock tranny. The one I'm getting will drop like 25 or 35 lbs., I forget. I'm also upgrading the differential yolk. The weak point will be the forward u-joint. It'll hold up to roughly 550-600 hp. I'll let you know more when I get mine or you can call JPC and ask them about it. BMR is also making a carbon fiber one with billet yolks-but it will cost you!
Good question. It cost's about $500 to buy one from the dealership. I'm not sure if it's cheaper to make or what. I've heard it's rated upto approx. 600 hp or that could be someone's opinion. My broke due to twisting the body too much at launch. I sortof reconfigured the geometry back there and the driveshaft wanted nothing to do with it. A long time ago, I heard it was due to exhaust and the gas tank. I don't see how though.

Check out BMR's 1 piece Carbon Fiber shaft. A little pricey, @ just over 1K, but worth it..IMO
Rated @ over 1K HP, and over 22 lbs. lighter than stock,15+ HP gain. I'll put that on my Christmas wish list

Sonic05,
I have slop bad also...about 1-1.5 in twisting play on the shaft by hand, plus the whine....wonder if this should go to the dealer @ only 3K on the odometer..maybe someone will throw some knowledge our way on this matter.

I believe the two piece design consideration has to do more with drive line harmonics (vibration). The two piece being less of a problem than a longer single piece one. I would not worry about a single piece one if its made right and correctly balanced.
A whine should be looked at. The slop / clunk you hear is [likely] all the driveline clearances between the trans and the diff that gets taken up on the shift between gears. Throttle hang on these cars makes a clean shift not possible unless you wait three seconds or so for the engine to wind down a bit before engage the clutch. This lts the engine spped get down to matching the input shaft speed for the gear you have shifted to. Anyway my 02 on that observation.

Hey, after having the dealer do the strut bearings, I was surprised to see that little service note that the clank that is still there is in the driveshaft: "they all do that". I hate that response.
Hopefully more aftermarket driveshafts come out for stock trannys and rearends that are a little more reasonable in price. I thought that aluminum for my Buick was less than $400 a few years ago [and I thought THAT was a lot], but I could be wrong.

Well, I was in Tampa today and stopped by BMR. I picked up the carbon fiber driveshaft. Here are some pics (not installed yet). I did find out that the two-piece shaft is due to vibration. The carbon fiber shaft is 16lbs, everything shown in the pics. I was going to install it tonight, but I the rear yolk is installed and will be setting the pinion depth all over again. It has to set exactly where it currently is set. I'm not touching it! I picked up an anti-roll bar as well. Being that I don't have a rear swaybar, the anti-roll bar functions similiarly and will keep the front wheels level at launch (hopefully). The brackets will have to be welded to the axle and the front brackets will be welded to the frame.

Nice 169
Enjoy, I look forward to your feedback on it. Christmas for me
RadBOSS,
Thanks for your insight on this, seem to only happen to me on slow shifts. Shift..clunk, mainly 2nd and 3rd. If I shift above 3.5K, no problem at all.
Mike,
"They all do that"...is what I figured I would get from the dealer.

Not quite. It's probably the most expensive piece I've bought for the car. The only other thing I'd like possibly do is the heim type LCA's. I have to regroup on the fun $$$. I'm eating up bushings in my current LCA's as I've heard that all companies are having the same issues with bushings. If you feel the rearend shift outwards while shifting gears...check the bushings! BMR is making a nice K-member though. Not sure of any specifics on it though.
Sweet part...i can't throw that kinda coin on one though...hopefully there will be some aluminum units at a cheaper cost. Why do you have a panhard rod relocation bracket> Do you have a different rearend cover? Do you have LCA relocation brackets for this instant center thing with lowered cars?

so far that's the tune more or less that I have been given by the dealer when i complained about syncro drag and grab ... his excuse being the HD transmissions are all that way ... what a crock!
Now he is waiting for that 'totally satisfied' customer survey ... hah!

an aluminum unit will run you roughly $700-$900, right now. I have the relocation brackets to bring the panhard out, away from the differential due to having a girdle. A girdle will not fit with the panhard bar...without a bit of grinding on both the panhard and girdle. I do have the LCA relocation brackets as well. Almost everything in the rearend is from BMR, less the carrier, LCA's and springs. Adj. Panhard bar, panhard reloc. bracket, anti-roll bar, QA1 shocks, LCA relocation brackets. I may be getting the Heim race LCA's from BMR if I go through another set of bushings on my current ones anytime soon.
I'm curious if the single piece replacement driveshafts will have any vibration issues. I doubt Ford went to the trouble of installing a more complex and costly 2 piece unit if they absolutely didn't have to.
The SN95's were notorious for driveline clunks, and with almost the same rear end and the same trans, I wouldn't expect any less with the S197 car. There was always someone bringing up the issue on the Corral's website.
