I am actively looking for a set of drag tires. I haven't decided if I will go the full slick route or the drag radial/ET street-type versions.
My planned mods include a supercharger and 4.10 gears. Also, I have an auto tranny. So, I want to improve the launch capabilities from the line, but I also want to avoid overpowering the tires and just smoking them.
So, I'm curious about the advantages and disadvantages of the overall tire diameter. For example, what would be the pros/cons of running a 26" dia tire versus a 28" dia tire?
I am interested in all of your thoughts/opinions on the short vs. tall debate (keeping in mind my particular engine/trans/gears setup).
Thanks in advance!!!

Tough question.
1st. Overpowering the tires. You're better off with a bias ply tire than a radial. Bias ply wrinkle walls are more forgiving. If they don't hook immediately they will spin for a short time then hook. Radials are unforgiving once they break loose, it's up in smoke.
Bias ply tires will give the back end of your car a side to side shake in the shut down area, and also on the highway. Radials won't.
As the tire gets wider you need a larger dianeter tire. As the diameter gets larger you need a steeper gear. With a 28" dia. tire you would need to go to a 4.30 or a 4.56 gear.
I see a lot of S/C Cobras at the track running the 26" dia. M/T ET street radials.

Thanks for the feedback George!
Any idea what gear ratio the Cobras are running?
Also, 13.2 with the auto is a nice pass. How much of a difference did your 4.10s make? Any other tips for a fellow AT guy?

For sure shorter tires, it is the poor man's short gear ratio. Unless you have lots of RPM/top fuel type horsepower you won't get good ET's and MPH with the 28 inchers, well if you have a supercharger or NO2 you might but you will be through a couple of sets of slicks/tires by then anyway.

As for me, I will be testing out the 28" ET Drags, but I have 4.56 gears. Once I'm done testing/playing with this setup, I may go to a 26" tire and go to a 4.10 or 4.30 gear. It's at that point that I will most likely be ready to install the nitrous kit. I don't think the 28" tire will be too much with the 4.56 gears. I know I'll have the HP to turn a 26" maybe 28" with the 4.10 or 4.30's and a nitrous kit. These cars are great with the rpm and with my launching at 6000, I really don't think the 28" will be too much.

just kidding. I've been told 4-6 weeks, but George has surpassed this time frame. Then again, I believe he ordered while they were in the process of moving their production facility. I was told last week that they were catching up with production, so I may see mine more in the 6-8 week time frame. JPC has the best price that I have found so far. They also sell the front wheel for less then the rear. Some shops sell all four wheels for the same price.

I honestly don't recall. I also ordered front tires from them. I will look up my cost on it and post it.
EDIT: $1400 for the wheels and front tires.
