<disclaimer>Don't flame me for thinking like a ricer.</disclaimer>

A question for the tuning gods...

Is it possible to create flame tune? A tune that would enrich the a/f ratio enough to shoot a flame from the exhaust such as during a decceleration. I'm not sure what it would take to trigger it. Would it require offroad pipes? Could you use the 2 step rev limiter function of the xcal2 for this?

I realize this has no practical use, it's just something I was curious about.

When I was turbo with my import a few years ago.... I got flames/fireballs popping out my exhaust just because I was running so rich and in between shifts I sometimes would get a little puff of light and flame...

I was actually kinda embarassed by it due to the movie "the fast and the clueless"...

you can buy an ebay kit that puts a fuel line and spark plug in your tailpipe.... pretty safe huh? hahahahah or you can just go turbo and run rich all the time.... and hope conditions are right and the exhaust hot enough to ignite the extra fuel.

Agreed. I realize it's a waste. That's why I tried to put enough disclaimers in my post. This was a theoretical excercise to see if it could be done with a tune alone (without the old spark plug gag), and what aspects of the tune would produce the most affect.

Dumping that much raw gas on a Cat would kill it.

With out modifications to a basically stock exhaust system I don't think you could keep exhaust temps high enough to ignite the mixture when it hit the air. I suspect you'd have more chance of a backfire than flames.

what type of a/f ratio are we talking about? I figured an off road pipe would be required. You may have to play some tricks with the ignition timing/spark to get a flame. I can only speculate. I see the flames often on race cars especially turbos.

I don't think it is possible, and wouldn't it burn the rear bumper?

OK. OK. I give up.

P.S. My original post should have been: how rich would a tune have to be before you start seeing flames

Now I remember why I don't visit this site much anymore. This is the crap you get in the performance section. Next there will be people asking how to install a Vtec into their stangs.

Listen up. I kinda expected the response i recieved. If you notice my initial post #1, i tried to warn you that it was going to be a sensitive question. So I'm not disappointed with the response i received. It's a tough room around here sometimes.

It's nothing that I would consider doing, nor was it meant to be a silly post. I even said in my first post, there is no practical use. It was meant to discuss the cause and affect. (X would cause Y, etc.)

it could have been worse... I wonder what would have happened if you asked to install a skyline driveline or convert it to FWD

If this was something you really want to do, you're better off getting some kind of aftermarket kit that does it all downstream

Things are a lot more complicated nowadays from when all you had to do was run the carb rich and have plugs and a coil wired to the exhaust tips.

In any case, i'm sure you understand the reaction of many old-school musclecar boys, as long as you're laughing with them too
