Here is the truth....shorties will gain you nothing. Longtubes are good for about 20rwhp. 10 comes from the loss of the cats and the other 10 from the better breathing the longtubes give you. Been there and done that.
I run longtubes.

I also am running long tubes with high flow catted x pipe and believe I have gained at least 20hp+ from what I have read. There are several mags that have done dyno tests on the long tubes.
Only worth if you are considering a turbo, or if emissions inspections are a concern. Heck, I'm in California, and I have LTs. Like 70sMachOneOwner said, I gained maybe 10 hp going from or/x shorties to o/r x LTs. BTW, get some CMCV deletes, if you already haven't.

I've had just about every exhaust set-up for the S197, even headers. They did sound great but for me, the definite loss of low end torque was a real let down. This car was tuned and I personally never felt ANY power from the headers. I think power adders are when headers truly show their worth. I've always mainted that unless you're going FI, a simple loss of the cats are a best option from roughly the same amount of power. The 4.6 modular isn't a big engine and needs a little back pressure to make its power, open it up too much and low end dissipates.
But now that I'm cammed I do feel the need to add shortys (tuned length)
Now that I'm pushing more exhaust.

Shorty headers ARE better than manifolds if you buy a set with pretty decent size primary tubes. But they don't help a whole lot. They also help keep a little heat out of the engine bay. So better than manifolds but not as good as long tubes.
