D-Spec Install, Front Strut

I did a search and could not find what I was looking for. Regarding the 19mm across the flat nut on the end of the shaft, how do you torque that bugger to specified 38-49 ft-lbs without getting hurt? I have tried using a wrench on the nut and a backup wrench on the shaft as to get as tight as I could (maybe I need to work out some more?), followed by trying to tighten more with the my torque wrench just set at 40 ft-lbs and the nut and the shaft of course rotate together.

TacoBill has a full write-up on this.

Give me a second and I'll post the link.

You need to use a 22mm open end on the shaft and another open end on the nut. Once you have them tight, just use the torque wrench on the nut to verify you are at least 39 ft - lb.

That is what I tried, but did not get enough preload to finish it off with the torque wrench. Guess I will try again. I looked for Taco Bill's write up but could not find it on his list of posts ... maybe by glasses are failing.

Unless you have a torque wrench that is hollow all the way through the ratchet head I don't know how you're going to get an accurate reading as you need to hold the shaft with a 8 or 10mm wrench. What we've done, yes with TacoBill himself, is tighten the nut down as much as you can once it bottoms out. 40ft isn't much torque and if you are holding the shaft with another wrench with the 22mm open end then you are likely hitting that torque number and possibly then some.

It's all I did when I swapped mine out for the FRPP struts and they've been on now almost 2 years without any issues at all.

YMMV

Loctite is your friend. I guesstimated the torque and been fine for 2 1/2 years.

That was my next choice. Even Tokico did not offer more than back up the shaft with wrench and tighten the nut real tight, bit don't over tighten. With that approach, that is all they should say in their instructions rather than citing a specific torque range that can not easily or reliably be achieved.

Everyone, thanks for your input.
